$74,000 from a great Aunt. I paid off everything I owed money on and bought a room full of medievel swords.

My parents were poor. Bro and I got 20K each after sale of their house.

I took the 20K and the 30K I had saved and bought lake front property.

Four years later I sold my home in Shreveport and built my home on that property. I'm looking out at the sunset over the water as I type. There's still some snow on the dock.

Money? Nothing.

I got my Maw-Maw's engagement ring to use the stone for my wife's and I know there are few items in my Paw-Paw's will that will be mine. He doesn't have any real cash, though and the house isn't in their name.

grandfather left me $10k when I was 9. It was put into a trust until I turned 18. Took it out at 23, started my Roth IRA, funded it for 2 years, bought an engagement ring, and put the rest in a savings account

Cypress

Edit: BTW, although this never happened to me I've known people who went through the home of a deceased grandparent and found tons of money because the grandparent never trusted banks after the Depression.

A guy I worked with had a grandfather die, they found about 300K stashed throughout his house in paper grocery bags.

Inherited a small part of a trust, worth about $15000 or so. It was set to make monthly distributions until it ran out.

Unfortunately, grandma directed the trust to invest in local real estate at the peak of the market. I would but it is still free money I didn't have before, just not as much, so

Wow, pretty frivolous. I'd be pissed if I left someone money and they spent it on something stupid like that.

Bought a car, paid for college, started a college fund for my little sister, and gave some to my mom.
