When Les Miles, a Michigan man, turned down the great program of Michigan, LSU climbed another step on the ladder of the elite programs. It hurt LSU when Dietzel left, but everyone understood why he did it. Tennessee has looked mediocre as a program in the last few years. Even Auburn and Nebraska and Miami are not the kinds of programs that coaches are likely to stay at if an elite program comes calling. Even Saban admitted that it was a mistake to leave LSU.

No, LSU has not climbed anything by this "decision"

The SEC IS the elite and LSU is among the top of that ladder.

Quit trying to make something out of nothing, preacher.

I was sort of on board with what you were saying up until that point. I never heard Saban publically state such a fact.

I guess it could be implied since he spent so little time with the Dolphins

Not an Auburn fan, but I don't think Gene Chizick will be leaving for another college. He is where he wants to be. If he ever left, it would be to the NFL, and I don't see that either. He keeps Auburn relevant, he has a job for a long, long time.

SFP, they are going to continue to claim he made some major sacrifice that they have no proof of.

i believe it was one of the interviews he gave on espn about leaving the dolphins and flat out saying he wasn't going to be the coach at alabama. he stated that leaving lsu was the biggest mistake of his life, or something to that degree.

Saban has said many times that if he could have come back to lsu after the miami debacle he would have. Of course this was right before they made a statue of him at bama and he won the mnnc.

The word I am hearing is that Michigan offered him at least 1 million per year more that what he would get from LSU. But Miles turned it down, wanting to coach at LSU, live in Baton Rouge and win another championship before retiring.

He did in fact say those words at a press conference. I personally heard it.

You and I have apparently have a different definition of elite.

Which one of these things doesn’t belong with the others?

Les Miles, Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Tommy Tuberville, Gene Chizik, Mark Richt, Steve Spurrier, Jim Tressel, Lloyd Carr, Mack Brown, Pete Carroll, Gary Patterson, Chris Petersen, R.C. Slocum, Kyle Whittingham, Phil Fulmer, Larry Coker, Bob Stoops, Bobby Bowden, Tommy Bowden, Terry Bowden, Chip Kelly, John Harbaugh, Brian Kelly, Mark Mangino, June Jones, Bobby Petrino, Barry Alvarez, Joe Paterno, Rich Rodriguez, Dennis Franchione, Dan Hawkins and Chris Ault.

What'd they serve for dinner?

Every single one of these collegiate coaches has led a team to a season with one or less losses except for one. The first one. And I only included coaches who have done it since 2003 (except for RC Slocum and JoePa). So that leaves off a lot of elite coaches. And I didn’t even include NCAA Div 1 – FCS or 1-AA or whatever they call it these days.

But he has a championship, through whatever Voodoo magic happened in 2007. So you can't argue with the results.

Only a handful in that group have done the same.

i think paul dietzel knows he erred when he left LSU. he left for a program that, in those days, was perceived as a pinnacle job. didn't work out that way. i feel there are a lot of parallels with this situation.

Franc, your definition of elite program is bizarre. Elite teams are not teams that have irregular great seasons but irregular poor seasons. LSU is expected by fans and media to be contenders nearly EVERY year for almost a decade. LSU wins the recruiting battles. LSU picks the Cotton Bowl over the Cap One bowl and looks brilliant in doing so. LSU has athletes frequently in the Heisman talks and for other such awards. LSU has the highest paid coaches and a very high graduation rate. I can continue with many more characteristics that are figured into an elite program rather than your bizarre definition, but time restrains me.

I agree with your assessment but . . .

. . . you strayed a little bit here.

PP and Dorsey got some buzz, but we're nowhere near being a program associated with Heisman contenders.

I'm still very happy with the state of our program, tho.

+1
LSU did not climb anything, wow the amount of crap people invent.

Miles saw a very hard job with a lot of personnel missing for lower $ or at best equal $and
I am not sure Miles is a rebuilder.

The insider word is that Michigan offered him 1 Million more than LSU would pay him. He is known as a great recruiter and a leader of leaders. He could of and would of restored quality to Michigan program. But he cant win an NC there in the next four years and he can at LSU. I expect that he will retire and then eventually become the AD of Michigan and be instrumental in the future success of Michigan.
