Is this now a no-turning-back decision for Miles?

Assuming Michigan came after him once and he said no; assuming Michigan came after him this week for a second time, and he said no...is this the last time Michigan comes after Miles? Whether based on pride/dignity or being pissed at being turned down twice, is Michigan now officially "over" Les Miles?

And if they are, then what do you think of Miles - has he given up his dream job, cut the strings to home and committed himself all-in to LSU? Not to be overly dramatic, but if he did so and if he knows he's watching their tail lights for the last time, then perhaps he truly, finally, deserves our all-in support, weird and whacky and stubbon notwithstanding.

Discuss.

Nick Satan left us high and dry, and there were plenty of folks on here who were ready to bring him back. I think if Hoke turns out to be another RR, Michigan will be back in LA three years from now--maybe sooner. Hopefully we can pick up another national championship before then.

Definitely.... He's all in now and time for us all to appreciate the quality man and coach we've got. This is also a statement about how far Michigan has fallen.

When Hoke recruits more real big 10 athletes and flames out in 3 years then it will be the time to go.

Mettenberger better be the real deal or Alleva might help Miles pack next time.

I would think so, though not for the reasons you think. His age starts to become a factor - if Michigan is in this position again in 3 years, I think he may be too old for serious consideration.

He's 57, he's a man.

Not many chances left, unless he wants to pull a Paterno and coach until the end of time.

Yes thats why this holding LSU hostage is crap. At his age this was his last chance to make a change and go back home, and he had to give it a fair shot

Inception

eta: That may no longer be his dream job, besides Ann harbor is only 45 min from Detroit. Who want to live there right now?

I Think it's more of a no turning back decision for LSU.

What does age have to do with anything?
Joe Pa is almost as old as God and Bobby Bowden was as old as the hills when he retired.

I see the "holding hostage" line of thinking but I don't get it. How is it holding us hostage when the entire matter - from Miles' perspective - played out in little more/less than a week? When did Harbaugh sign with SF? We were at the Cotton Bowl (yay!) and I lost track of time but that's only been a few short days ago. Even if you think Miles was always in the pool, they appear not to have come to him seriously until the last few days, and he made his decision promptly. Certainly not in the Saban/Meyer..."maybe I won't promise I won't ooops I did" mode of dealing with us. I don't see that as holding hostage.

I think he made the right decision - just wondering if Michigan ever dips into the well again or if Miles figured this was a no turning back, no regrets moment. And FWIW, I do think his family is happy here and from what I can see, he's that kinda guy, that it matters to him that his kids are happy.

When they retired, not when they left for another school. They weren't moving once they hit their 50s.

yes, it's over forever with Les going to UM

Doubt the man coaches anywhere else but LSU from here on out if he continues to put together very solid seasons.

From a practical standpoint, yes.

There are a couple of unusual scenarios, sudden death or quick jump to the NFL for the next coach, but realistically, the job isn't going to come open for at least 3 or 4 more seasons, at the soonest, counting 2011.

After the 2014 football season, Miles will be 61 years old - to put that in perspective, Spurrier was a couple months shy of 60 years old when he took the USCe job. Probably too old to tackle a job like Michigan at that point. USCe had nothing to lose with Spurrier.
