Any Appalachian Trail hikers around?

My family has started an annual trip to the Smokys two years ago. We camp for 5 nights at Elkmont. I have become increasingly interested in hiking portions of the trail during our trips. My ultimate goal would be to do the entire trail...over several years of course.
Just curious how some of you handled the logistics. Drop off, pick up, gear etc.
