Mainieri: Budget cuts having an impact on LSU baseball

The LSU baseball team lost out on a high-quality recruit because of concerns about how budget cuts will impact the university, Coach Paul Mainieri told the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge today.

Josh Bell, an outfielder from Dallas, had committed to be part of the team's 2012 recruiting class. Baseball America currently has Bell listed as the sixth-best high school baseball player in the country. But budget cuts forced LSU to take away the legacy scholarship they were going to give Bell that would have supplemented his partial athletic scholarship, Mainieri says.

Bell's mother was also concerned about how state budget cuts could affect LSU's academic standing.

Bell is now committed to play baseball for Texas.

Mainieri says the college baseball landscape is much more competitive now because former LSU Coach Skip Bertman showed rival schools that a quality program could be a money maker for universities.

"In the SEC, the 11 other teams are capable of winning national championships," he says.

While the Tigers are set to begin practice for the 2011 season this month, Mainieri didn't talk specifically about the team to the Rotary audience. Instead, he talked broadly about the benefits of hard work and his aim to meet fan expectations of having a winning team.

LSU opens the 2011 season Feb. 18 at home against Wake Forest.

The Tigers, who captured the 2009 College World Series title, are seeking their third CWS appearance in the past four seasons. They're ranked 15th in the preseason Collegiate Baseballpoll, behind three other SEC schools: Florida, Vanderbilt and South Carolina.

So he'll never play college ball.

#1. He will never make it to college.

#2. This kid is from Texas. Texas has a program every bit as good as LSU. It sounds like an excuse to tell the coach.

#3. Better to miss on this guy than to get a commitment and then see him go pro and leave us holding the bag.

Not really. This happens a good bit in baseball. With everyone only getting partial scholarships, players will literally go wherever they get the most money. It's a legitimate reason, not an excuse. It won't stop until the NCAA gets its head out of its own arse and gives baseball more scholarships to work with.

why blame the ncaa? seems like they get the first shot when someone disagrees with something. clearly, the members of the ncaa, when faced with the absolute destruction of many non-revenue sports when title 9 (or whatever) was passed and dictated the same (or thereabout) schollies for girls took action to limit men's sport scholarships. basically, they had no choice. LSU can afford more baseball schollies, but we are one of the few.

Settle down... Josh Bell will be signing a pro contract. Texas and LSU were leverage end of story.

The Title IX problem comes in because they factor football into Title IX numbers for men's scholarships when they shouldn't be, for two reasons: nothing in the rules states that football is solely a men's sport and if it were, there is no women's sport that can be equitably compensated scholarship wise to make it even for other sports.

Which is why you end up with 15 schollies for women's BBall, but only 13 for men's. Or 18 schollies for Women's swim & dive versus 9.9 for men's. I think softball has more schollies available than baseball, and they need far fewer players to field a team.

Also, Men's hockey gets 18 scholarships for a 25 man roster and baseball gets 11.78 for a 35 man roster. There are only 60 D1 hockey programs, there are about 300 baseball programs.

Probaby....but that is assuming that he will drafted as highly as he is currently ranked. And don't discount the fact that if they are talking about a "legacy" scholarship, that he is the son of an LSU alumni and has probably been a Tiger fan since birth.....unlike many of these top HS kids that has got a commitment from and came very close to keeping. That is a HUGE factor.
