If you're an NFL GM and you could chose EITHER Luck or Harbaugh...

Assume it's a team that needs a new head coach and QB.

Andrew Luck. When's the last time a college coach translated well to the NFL?

The last one was a 47 year old head coach from Stanford.

32 years ago. And Jimmy Johnson 22 years ago. Maybe Tom Coughlin. That's it.

Yeah but if you look at it like that, say maybe 5-10% of college coaches work out, what percentage of coaches who come from other NFL positions work out? The vast majority of both get fired before winning anything without ever looking particularly special.

Personally I'd take Harbaugh because I'm so impressed with the way his teams play. Even though I think Luck will definitely be a success, and in the knowledge that without a good QB you just can't expect to get anywhere in the NFL these days.

Agreed, but the odds of that translating to the NFL...he would be PERFECT for Notre Dame or Michigan just because of the way the guys on those teams have traditionally been VERY close knit as a group. Don't see the same bonds forged on an NFL roster.

Yeah, it's definitely close. And in Luck's favour, assuming he's not a bust, then you've got a decent QB for like 10 years, most head coaches don't last that long unless they're exceptional...

Luck. It's a QB driven league.

I also think it would be great for college football if Harbaugh decided to stick around. With Carroll running away from the NCAA to the NFL and CUM stepping down due to health issues, the truly elite coaches in CFB are few and far between. Saban is actually probably the only elite coach left. But if Harbaugh goes to Michigan, I definitely see him giving Saban a run for his money. It would be fun watching the chess match between those two coaches in 2012.

If people kept using those puns I'd probably begin to Harbaugh a little resentment...

In college, yeah. In the NFL coaching matters more.

Lead them to their only playoff win in the last 20 years? Of course you need good players to win, but in the NFL coaching matters more.

They are two very similar situations.

CFB coaches have not fared well in the NFL recently.

And high draft choices have not done well either at QB.

I would take Harbaugh. He is a winner. His brother wins, althobeit, with a great defense. He has winning in his blood, and is a very smart coach.

Luck can be the next Peyton Manning or the next Ryan Leaf.
