I am taking my nephew camping and squirrel hunting for new years. He wanted to set some snares for squirrel as well. I did a brief search on La Wildlife and Fisheries to see if I could find anything about this but didnt come across anything. Is it legal to set snares? Is this frowned upon in the hunting community? I had never thought of doing this.

This.

Chances are very low that you would be successful catching a squirrel like this. May be a waste of time and energy.

Thanks for the input. My nephew asked if it could be done, so I watched a couple of youtube vids on how to do it. I thought it might be fun to give it a try if thats what he wanted to do. I dont have a trapping license so it seems like it is a no go.

P.S. If i was trying to be Baer Gryls I would just throw a stick @ them and kill them that way

I tried setting some snares for squirells when I was a young guy and I was never remotely close. But I did manage to kill a dove sitting on a limb with a tennis ball.

The only guy I've ever known to snare a squirrel was the most experienced trapper I've ever known. Somebody bet him it couldn't be done. He watched the squirrels in his yard for a few days and figured out they were using this same limb to run from one tree to the other. He set a small snare up on that limb and caught one. From then on we never said anything about "it couldn't be done".
