I say off the bench for the following reasons:

1.) would be more aggressive to create/find his own shot w/o having to defer to CP3 & D.West. It seemed like he was tentative last night playing with the other starters.

2.) he would be going against the opposing team's backup 2, who are usually a little more offensive oriented and not lock down defenders, thereby allowing him to get better shots/more looks

3.) Bellinelli needs CP3 and D.West to take pressure off of him. I don't know how well he would succeed running w/ the two's and having to create his own shot and being counted on more.

(I realize MT5 didn't start last night, but as quick as he came in, he played more with the first unit than w/ the 2nd team)

What say you?

the whole "start or come of the bench" crap is overrated.

starters spend the first 6-7 minutes of the game playing together.
the other 43 minutes is filled with substitutions and various other lineup combinations.

sure its nice to have someone push the tempo and score some points when the starters take a break, but having your best players on the floor is pretty important also.

Manu Ginobli gets a ton of minutes... but he doesn't start... yet he plays with the starters for 95% of the time he's in the game.
why not just start the dude?

I think you answered your own question, very well in fact.

Combine your post with the OP and you have one great answer to the whole issue.

I think we're at a point where Thornton might need to come off the bench much earlier in the game more consistently. The way things are looking, Thornton needs to get half of the available minutes at SG and SF when Monty plays those small ball sets.

Let Belinelli, Jack, and Green, when he comes back after his family loss, get what's left.

Thornton is our 3rd best scoring option. He needs to play 30 minutes. However they may come, he needs to get them.

Ginobli was in a similar position early in his career. It's up to the coach to give him more opportunities and MT5 to capitalize on his limited playing time - starter or no starter, it doesnt matter.
