The more I follow coaching changes, the more I realize how tough it can be to land a "home run hire." Here is a list of BCS program hires in the last 2 years.

In terms of getting a head coach with sustained success, only 2 schools seemed to have done that - Notre Dame and Texas Tech.

Florida - Will Muschamp (Texas DC)
Florida State - Jimbo Fisher (FSU OC)
Kansas - Turner Gill (Buffalo HC)
Kentucky - Joker Phillips (Kentucky OC)
Louisville - Charlie Strong (Florida DC)
Miami - Al Golden (Temple HC)
Notre Dame - Brian Kelly (Cincinnati HC)
Tennessee - Derek Dooley (LA Tech HC)
Texas Tech - Tommy Tuberville (Auburn HC)
USC - Lane Kiffin (Tennessee HC)
Virginia - Mike London (Richmond HC)

Well, for the most part if you are a big name, successful head coach somewhere, why would you want to change jobs? It typically wouldn't befor the money, because God knows most of the major BCS schools can pony up just as much cash as the next one to keep you happy. If you are winning and being paid well there isn't much of a reason to pick up your family and move them halfway across the country to start a new job.

That leaves the talent pool of "proven" head coaches available filled with those who have resigned, retired or been fired. If you have been fired there was usually a reason and you are damaged goods. If you resigned there is typically an understanding that it was to save face because you were about to be fired and are damaged goods. If you retired, you really don't want to work anymore, at least for a couple of years.

I think so. I should have clarified that his most recent gig was as Auburn HC. As LLama pointed out, he was run out of town so Texas Tech basically hired an unemployed coach.

theres a hierarchy in college football. the best schools have always had the built in advantage that makes it easier to win. and dont forget football coaches have some of the biggest egos alive and think they can change/ turnaround any place they go

True, but take for instance Stoops at OU. Say Florida offred him at 3 mil a year. You don't think that OU would counter that? Of course they would, and it isn't like UF is head and shoulders above OU.

Now jumping from someplace like Syracuse to Florida would be another story, but typically something like that wouldn't be considered a "homerun" hire in the first place unless the guy was some superstud coach. And guess what, superstud coaches at small programs don't always transition well to big time jobs (see Gill, Turner for further reading).

Why would they offer him less than what he makes now?

Can we let it play out for the next 3 years before we term a guy who did 7-5 a "home run hire". Remember rich rod.....

i think he means home run as in winner at a BCS school, winning track record. i think home run refers to the coach before he coaches a game

Man, you need to read a little closer. I didn't call any of those guys "home run hires".

Here's what I said:
"In terms of getting a head coach with sustained success, only 2 schools seemed to have done that - Notre Dame and Texas Tech."

And I think that statement is true. Tuberville had a level of sustained success at Auburn, and Kelly had a level of sustained success at Cincy (I think he was 34-6 in 3 years).

My original point is that none of those hires were glamorous. Some may turn out great for a particular school, but it's not like colleges are reeling in Gruden, Shanahan, Stoops, Cowher, etc. like some fans believe would happen at their school.

Edited to add:

Yes, I remember Rich Rod. He went 3-9 in his first year, as opposed to Brian Kelly's 7-5. Not sure what your point is.
