It only took Guy Mistretta five days to find another head coaching job.
Mistretta was hired as head football coach-assistant athletic director at The Dunham School on Wednesday, less than a week after resigning as head coach at Redemptorist.
“When I resigned last Friday, I had already talked to a couple of schools briefly and one of them was Dunham,” Mistretta said. “I knew it was one of the situations I wanted to pursue. I was able to go over and see the school and sit down with them on Monday.
“To be honest with you, I didn’t really know a whole lot about Dunham. And I was just blown away by the facilities and programs they offer. I think it’s a good fit for me.”
Mistretta resigned as head football coach at Class 3A Redemptorist last Friday. He compiled a 70-18 record in seven seasons as head coach at his alma mater and won a Class 3A state title in 2005. With Redemptorist dropping to Class 2A, the Wolves will be a district rival of Dunham.
Redemptorist advanced to the playoffs in each of Mistretta’s seven years, including a 10-2 mark this fall that included a berth in the 3A quarterfinals.
In all, the 41-year-old Mistretta, a 1987 Redemptorist graduate, spent 18 years as a coach at the school. He was the defensive coordinator when the Wolves won a 3A state title in 2002 and a 4A crown in 2003. He also coached Redemptorist to six state titles in wrestling.
Mistretta succeeds Dunham Athletic Director Joey Thibodeaux, who resigned last month after 20 seasons that included 18 trips to the playoffs.
Thibodeaux said Mistretta’s track record and longevity at Redemptorist made him an attractive candidate for the Tigers. Mistretta was one of two applicants interviewed, according to Thibodeaux, and will begin work in January.
“I’m real happy for our that we got him,” Thibodeaux said. “Personally speaking, I was impressed not only with what he’s done, but also with the fact that he stayed in one place for so long.
“I was looking for someone who would come here and be loyal to our school. I think we’ve found that.”
Thibodeaux said Mistretta’s interview made an impression on the school’s headmaster, Bobby Welch.
In a school news release, Welch noted that Mistretta received high marks from other local coaches he spoke with.

the other school Mistretta was talking to was EA.
He knew where he was going when he left Redemptorist. He knew he had to get out, RHS was going nowhere but down.

When i went to RHS, we were just fine.
Once i found out that our long time principal was finally retireing i automatically knew it wasnt never gonna be the same.
We need new adminstration. Current adminstration isnt doing nothing to advance and improve the school.

It wont matter who is in there, with the emergence of Central and Zachary, Redemptorist will never be the same. I wouldn't be surprised if RHS is shut down within 5 years. They are struggling mightily.

Dunham def wants to step up their football game and bring in good talent..
Dunham better be prepared to open their checkbooks and get ready to pay tution for "recurited" football players from public middle schools...
I doubt RHS will shut its doors. The diosease will let it just become small..RHS is the only catholic high school in BR with a special ed and dyslexia program...RHS just needs to step it up and compete with other schools like they used to...dont let the school fall aside.

they have been doing this for about the last 5 years. The watershed is about to break at Dunham. Players will be flooding in. With Mistretta as FB and Pixley as BB, talented kids will make the switch.

The school has already fallen aside. The programs you mention might be moved to other catholic schools, but RHS is soon to be fallen off the map.
Dunham from what I hear is ready to make the step to become a power in 2A. The money people are in place.

Thats whats gonna keep RHS open. If they move the programs to St. Mich (cause CHS and SJA aint gonna alow it, and they arent apart of the diosease).
St Mich wont be able to hold that mass amount of students. But they will boost up to 5A tho. And its also gonna make St Mich the "only" true feeder high school in BR..And Location is key also, RHS isnt in the best part of town but alot of parents send their kids there cause St Mich is super far for some.
Cause if mommy and daddy isnt a doctor, CEO or dont make $100,000 grand a year CHS and SJA aint even gonna finish reading your app.

If it is in BR, then I have an idea who it is. If it is who I think you are thinking about, it is the school I coach at.
We are often accused of that.

Mistretta had the job before he left Redemptorist.

Guy himself was hurting the program. He allowed and encouraged the players to act like fools and play dirty. I also graduated from RHS in 2007 and I agree that the school's administration needs to take an overhaul. I know for a fact the AD at RHS is a complete moron and should be let go. RHS will be okay, but the image of the school has to change with the new football coach. I hope he can do it the right way.

Kids were acting like that at RHS way before Mistretta was the head coach. Thats a fact.

Being close to the program...Mistretta is not the God yal assume he as and believe me he is part of hte problem. I am glad we are going in a new direction with the program.

I never thought of Mistretta of anything of that nature. I coach for a competing high school and I know that program well.
This is not the direction you want to be going in. There is nowhere but down for this school. I hate for it to be like that, but it is truly falling apart.

You obviously played for Mistretta, why would you get on here and say he is part of the problem. Mistretta has done a good job at Redemptorist and I wonder why a former player of his would say that about him?
