one of my friends practically inherited an entire arsenal of guns and knives from his dad when he died a few years ago, and he said he'd sell me one. I can't remember if he said he had his dealers license(I'm assuming he does), but either way he said he could basically sell me one and I wouldn't even have to get it registered or anything. He said that basically once he sells me one it's in my name. This seems kinda weird to me but he said it's just cuz the gun laws in Louisiana are so lax, but I couldn't imagine not having to show a cop some kind of paper work to prove that it was mine if such a situation arose. Is this true?
I'm not looking for anything big or expensive, probably just like a .22 or something for protection. With all this crime going on in BR, even in the area where I live which I thought was safe, I thought it'd be a good idea.
Also, it's my understanding that I can carry this in my car without any kind of license, since it's an extension of my home. Is there any specific place I would have to keep it? Like in the glove compartment or anything? I just want to be able to keep it in my car so that I can carry it to and from my apartment...just in case some a-hole decides to mug me or something when I come home late one night. I know this is basic stuff and these probably seem like dumb questions to most of y'all, I just want to get some more info before and if I do decide to eventually buy one. Thanks for any input...

a sad day when non-gun owners and non-educated gun owners, a large portion of the population, think gun registration is a good thing and the norm. Nothing against you Tiger, the gun community is to blame for the popular misconception. Here's a good read: LINK

As for the gun in your car. It is perfectly legal to have the gun stashed loaded ready to go where ever you see fit and can access it quickest. If you are pulled over you do not even have to tell the cop you have a gun in the car. If he ask if you have a gun or anything in your car you can tell him as Jay-Z once said, "The glove compartments locked so is the trunk in the back. I know my rights so your gonna need a warrant for that. I ain't pass the bar but I know a little bit, enough that you won't illegally search my shite."

As for carrying it to and from your apartment I don't know the rules on that since it's not all your property, so you're probably best making them chase you into your apartment before shooting them.

Lastly, you could not pick a worse round for self defense than a .22 unless your only goal is to make a loud noise before getting stabbed/shot. Stick with .380 ACP, at the bare minimum, or bigger.

Hope this helps.

Contrary to what you see on cop shows on TV you do not have to "register" a firearm.

not necessarily a .22...yeah that's kinda pussy now that I think about it
lookin at .380's and that's pretty much what I had in mind. Maybe even just a lil 9mm revolver or something like that. He literally has like 50 or 60 handguns alone so I'm sure he could recommend something. I was more curious about the laws and from reading that article it looks like he knows what he's talking about cuz that's pretty much what he told me. Just wanted to ask someone else to make sure what he said was right. Thanks for the info though.

if he has a dealer liscense, you will have to fill out federal transfer papers. Unless he has a gun shop I seriously doubt he has a liscense.

If he doesnt its a private sale, pay your money and take your new gun home.

You don't have to register it at all. A person-to-person sell is 100% legal. Writing up a bill of sale is probably a good idea though.

Definitely go larger than a .22. .380 or .38 Spcl Revolver would be perfect for someone with little gun knowledge.

You can keep it in your car, concealed or in sight.

Louisiana is an open carry state. You can carry it to your apartment with no worries.

It is illegal to carry one on you and to have it concealed. You can carry it on you if it is visible, but in order to carry a concealed weapon you would have to get a ccp.

Yeah it's been a while since I've talked to him so I'm probably thinking of somethin else. Mighta been a concealed weapons license or a license that allows you to own fully autos, which would be frickin awesome

Actually anyone with a clean record can. All it takes is some paperwork and a $200 tax stamp per weapon, silencer or destructive device. Gotta get you local law enforcement to sign off on each one unless you form an LLC or a trust.

Don't see why he wouldn't be. I'd have to ask him though...

1. Having a gun without being proficient at using it isn't a good idea.

2. Unless you are a paranoid MF, you will have trouble being vigilant enough walking to your apartment in a way that lets you actually be ready for a mugging. A 5-second draw from a bag will just get you shot.

3. A .22 is what you use to get good at shooting. It is never good for self defense, particularly because of the unreliability of rimfire ammo.

4. The better a gun is at killing people, the harder it will be for you to shoot it. See #1.
