Dog training tips.

Ok I come to the Outdoor Board for some help.
My dog has all the normal commands down (Sit, stay, down, fetch, no), but she doesn’t listen to me every single time on the first time. I need some tips on how to fine tune these commands and improve her obedience. Any games I can play or things I should do? Thanks in advance.

Short Dog Leash and tell her to heel and sit... if not... give her a love tap with one of these (pro heeling stick)... Repeat until she gets the point.. took mine about 5 whips and she does it all the time now...

If you use the stick, make sure he doesn't see you use it. If you heal the dog on your left. Put the stick in your right hand(Duh) and behind your back. While your walking, order sit, and if he doesn't do it right away, with the stick behind your back, pop him on the butt. He doesn't know where it's coming from and want be afraid of your hand.

If she is a way aways from you and won't listen get a shock colar.

It is a must if you are training for hunting IMO...

Not for hunting. My ultimate goal is for her to be a no leash dog.

Hunting or not, a shock collar when used correctly is THE BEST training tool on the market. Get a Tri Tronics training guide, follow the steps and you will have a great obedient dog.

With a shock collar you just have to be able to know your dog's personality and how it reacts to the shock. A dog can shut down if trained improperely with the shock collar.

It's definitely not a bad thing to use a collar. Just have to be careful with it. If you aren't hunting it, it's not like you are going to ruin it.

Nah. I've trained some quality hunting retrievers in my day and have never used one. Not saying they don't work, they do, but you can train a jam-up lab without one. The trick is rattling their eye teeth the first couple times you crack em on the head for disobedience. After that a good stern voice command will stop em like they just been popped with 480v.

Any good one has different levels of "stimulation" If one were to go nuts and just shock the shite out a dog for anything it did wrong, then yes you would ruin it.
And dogs have been trained for hundred's of yrs without one so of course you don't need one, but deer were hunted for hundreds of years without guns as well. Not saying you have to have one because you definately don't but if the technology is there why not use it.

A great "no leash" dog is one that has spent hours upon hours on a leash.
Get yourself a check cord. These can be bought or just simply tie a leash snap on 25-30 foot of rope. Walk the dog as normal and when something catches the dogs attention command heel. If the dog does not do what is asked simply use the rope to enforce the command. Never let yourself give a command that you are not in position to enforce if the dog chooses to disobey. The idea of the longer rope is to set up scenarios that allow the dog to be away from the heel position then commanded back to heel. When your dog is out in front doing his thing and a cat, other dog, butterfly.....ect. grabs his attention and you can stop him and command him to heel you are on your way to having a "no leash" dog.

I definitely recommend using one. As long as she knows the commands that you want her to obey, it will work well.
Most have a tone option that just beeps without shocking. I always give two beeps before shocking and 99.9% of the time, my dog responds after the first beep. This is even when she is excited chasing squirrels or wrestling with other dogs.

Best 200 bucks I ever spent. I haven't shocked my dog in about a month and that was bc she tried to chase a ole nasty opposum across the road. She was scared to death of it at first and wouldn't retrieve after I popped her but I regressed and started slow. Now it's only used in extreme situations, the whistle or my voice is all I need to really make her stop.

EXCELLENT advise
I don't think you need an e collar yet. I would work long and hard with a check cord. Get a choke chain and a check cord and learn to use it correctly and it's all you will need. Also the comment NEVER give a command you can't inforce is very much correct. The more you let your dog get away with not responding to a command the more he will learn to give you the middle finger.
I use a shock collar as part of my training with my dogs and whenever I take a dog on to train I use it but I don't think you need it yet from what you have described.
I am not a member of Amite River, but am of Pontchartrain. I have been very involved with Amite River in the past due to my proximity to them and know most of the members.

This is a strong point. I have seen dogs that are very stubborn and just don't care about being shocked one way or the other, they were doing what they wanted to do.
I have also seen dogs get a shock from a collar once in their life and listen and obey every command from then on. No reinforcement necessary.
I think it all depends on When the dog is started on training...the earlier the better imo...
