Be careful, beans are deceptively high in carbs if you're trying to do low carb. How many carbs are you considering taking in a day?

I just try to limit the amount of carbs I'm eating. and, I try to limit it to one meal a day. Usually it is zero meals a day. Today is different because my whole family is sick. Myself, wife, and daughter. The white bean chicken chili is a meal from the freezer and the bbq baked beans came from leftovers my mom cooked us.

I don't count anything I eat (carbs, calories, fat, etc.). A big part of my success is that I'm making healthy choices without nitpicking. I don't write down what I eat. I am conditioning myself to make healthy choices even when presented with bad opportunities. Since January, I've learned to say no to some of my favorite foods (fried foods, chocolate cakes, cookies, ice cream, poboys) without the need to count anything. And, I always eat until I am completely full.

If I had to count carbs, calories, etc., I don't think that I could maintain that once I'm done. And again, my goal is to maintain this diet for life. So, doing this on the fly is extremely important to me.

I very rarely have carbs, but don't freak out when I do. And, I think it is working out great. I've lost 30 lbs since I've started and no turning back now.

I wasn't trying to get on you or anything was just curious. I don't count anything anymore either, I just stay away from starches. That's what makes paleo so darn easy.

i think busey(?) or soemone in that other thread mentioned making everything themselves using fresh/non-processed ingredients.

this is a huge thing. so much 'filler' and bad shite (hidden sodium, etc) is packed into food..ESPECIALLY when you eat out..that its impossible to ever lose weight if you don't adopt this at a minimum.

you will never know what you're eating unless you take the time to use simple ingredients and regulate precisely what seasoning, butter, etc you're adding in.

I agree, although I actually eat out for lunch quite a bit now. The trick is I usually go to local places like Lamendola's here in Gonzales and get their baked or bbq chicken with some vegetable sides, or chicken shawarma from Albasha, or something along those lines. Or local mom and pop restaurants.. I trust those more than big chains.

we have a super wally just down the street from work, so I'll get some produce and the rotisserie roast chicken for lunches. Hope those chickens aren't too bad. They really don't load them up with seasoning.

There's a hefty amount of sodium, but nothing to really concern yourself with if you don't overeat.

That's pretty much what I'm trying. I need to sit down tonight a read through this whole thread, I've see some good information in it and feel like I'm missing some. Curse you Subway and your free cookie.

I was tired of going home for lunch, think i did pretty good ...picked up a half of baked chicken, green beans, and cole slaw from podnuhs for $6.29...I gave the texas toast away, didn't touch the sauce, and didn't eat the sauced skin on the chicken... not feeling guilty about it either !

In a nutshell, if you want to do low carb:

Cut out all processed sugars and carbs. Stay away from bread, pasta, corn, beans, rice, oats, etc. If you don't want to really aim for low-carb but just 'healthy' (what does that word even mean, btw?), then cut out white bread, white rice, etc. and go with whole grains and whole wheat. Lower glycemic indexes and much better for you.

Fats are NOT the devil and should not be treated as such. Healthy fats are a necessity. Coconut oil, olive oil, nuts, etc., are all great sources of healthy fats.

Obviously don't overeat, but don't undereat either. You should take in 1500-1800 calories/day. And when eating healthy, you can actually eat a LOT of food and still be in that range. My family looks at me weird because I eat pretty big meals (protein source, 2 big servings of veggies, and a fruit), but they don't understand that you're not supposed to be eating like a mouse. If you eat healthy, you can eat like a human is supposed to.

My advice (and myth, I think CAD follows this line of thinking as well) for exercise is.. if you're like me and have lots to lose, you're in it for the long haul. First focus on your eating and get so used to your changes that the new healthy eating style is 2nd nature before beginning an exercise regimen. Like, you don't even have to think about it anymore. 3-4 months in usually. The reasoning is so you don't get burnt out. Learning to eat differently and change your eating style can be taxing mentally because of the determination it requires. Once that's done, then you can start making other healthy choices, such as exercising, to start a new, healthier lifestyle.

To answer your next question, the x/x/x is starting weight, current weight, goal weight

I'm trying to avoid carbs but I'm not on any special diet. The main carb intake I have is at lunch (subway club on wheat) but I do need to learn what foods I can have while avoiding carbs. The only things I drink are water, coffee(splenda), and iced tea with splenda. And I seem to lose weight better when I cut splenda.

I figured out the x/x/x
220/215/180
I going to try and only weigh myself on Fridays, but having a pallet scale at work makes it hard.

winner winner chicken dinner.

the absolute best advice anyone in the world can get right there.

remember the engineering mantra? "don't change 2 things at once".

same goes for your diet. you have the rest of your life to exercise once you've fixed your eating problem.

eating is 90% of the problem and as such, should be focused on like a laser in the beginning.

only after you've tamed the hunger monster should you start going crazy with exercise. two reasons for this:

quote:

1. you're more likely to injure yourself when you're very overweight and just starting to put yourself in the right mentality to lose weight.

2. the tendancy to over-exercise or do things that exhaust you and rev up your appetite before you've learned to adequately adapt to new eating patterns can blow you up (literally) before you even get started.

most people that ditch new year's diets do so because they go fricking nuts in the gym the first 30 days and burn out.

after you've gotten food under control (the most important part of any diet..again THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF ANY DIET) then start exercising.

as a wise man told me, you can go from no-abs to abs in only 2 weeks of exercise..if the layer of fat is gone already. it doesn't take much exercise to get definition once you've reduced your body fat %.

again..exercise is far far FAR less important than fixing what goes in your mouth.

FACT: takes about 30-45 minutes of jogging to 'run off' a decent sized slice of pizza. let that sink in for awhile and you tell me which is easier to do; 45 minutes of running or skipping the pizza slice.

255-237.9-225

After a large increase over the weekend I am headed back in the right direction. Starting Monday, I will give up drinking enery drinks (Red Bull), Which accounts for 200 cals of my diet of 1,760/day. The app I am using will decrease my cal intake once I reach 235. So many reasons to stop drinking those damn things, but every morning I find myself leaving the store with more.

sugar makes it harder to lose weight, period. all calories are NOT created equal. people always fail to take into consideration how their bodies interact with the fuel (food) they're consuming.

Those drinks affect people different, it's all a per-person experience. Personally, a low-carb energy drink doesn't really affect my losses. For a while I was drinking at least 1 a day to kick start myself in the morning. I avoid taking extra caffeine now because of all of the supplements I take... the thermogenic and multivitamin combined have like 300 mg of caffeine

But anyway, get your eating under control before adding anything extra. once you're comfortable with your eating and you know it's working and you're doing it right, then you can try adding things like a sugar-free energy drink... see if it affects you in a negative way. Some people find that it slows their progress or halts it altogether, other people -like me- find it has no effect other than giving you the energy you desire.

eScott:
WATER
WATER
WATER
WATER

Drink LOTS OF WATER
You can go back to when I started up.. page 108 I think? I hate water. I did not want to increase my water intake.. but you NEED to drink AT LEAST 64 oz a day.. can't be stressed enough. Especially as you cut out carbs... less carbs, less fiber. I think you get where I'm going with this.. water helps that out. I drink a minimum of one gallon per day, and I'd recommend that to anyone. Yes, I'm one of the douches that just carries a gallon jug of water with him everywhere he goes. IDGAF. I am getting my drink on. 1 gallon minimum for good health. Helps flush out toxins. Also, if you go into a ketogenic state (40 or less grams of carbs normally leads to that), it's kinda tough on your kidneys.. drinking water will help alleviate that. Lots of water will help you curb your hunger. It will help your body flush out the fat it burns.

Cannot stress that point enough.
