About 15 years ago, my brother had a rod made for me by a guy named David Benoit, out of New Orleans. Anyone know him? Is he still around? I was looking to have something similar made.

Neither. I was pointing at my Falcon graphite rods Avi

Ive built about 7 rods all on graphite blanks. Your first one will be an abomination aesthically, but there is a steep learning curve and the ones after your first will be sweet. The guy who taught me makes custom tapered, split bamboo fly rods out of Tonkin Cane imported from Asia. He lives in BR, but I doubt he'd waste his time making a rod on a graphite blank at this time.
ETA: cane flyrods cost well over $1000 because of the labor involved.

What blank did you use? IM6 IM7 or what?

Both. Whatever I could get the best deal on at the time. I like to have travel rods that are 3 or 4 piece and they are very expensive to buy premade. Google a company called JJ King. They have great deals on blemished blanks. If you are building your first rod, I'd strongly recommend using a cheap blank because it is going to be ugly. Wrapping and flex-coating take some practice and special techniques. If you are in BR, the Redstickflyfishers club has a rodbuilding class every year.

A guy in the Denham Springs area (Watson) has made a couple of rods for me that are top notch. I buy them to give to my customers. They will run you anywhere from $60-$100, depending on what you get.

There's a guy in Pine Prairie, La that makes some beautiful ones. Can have your name "twined in".
Goes by "Acey". Basketball ref for years. If you're interested I can try to find his number.

Benoit did some incredible cork work for me. I'm almost afraid to fish with that thing.
