He was a Cub last night and he was responsible for the win for the Cubs. Tonight he's a Giant.

Lol is he playing tonight for the Giants? Will he actually play in SF?
Posted on 8/11/10 at 9:52 pm to TunaTigers
He didn't start tonight but one of our players got hurt last night and I think he will play in his position some.

The Cubs traded Fontenot to the Giants for a class A outfielder hitting .255 with 12 doubles, 12 triples, and 24 steals.
I know Fontenot isn't worth a whole lot, but damn, they basically just gave him away.

So they traded Fontenot, Theriot, and Lilly and got back 1 medicore major leaguer and some low level minor leaguers

This is the problem I have. None of the prospects they got in either trade are really impressive. I didn't expect to get major league ready guys, but damn, they could negotiate a little harder. It's not like trading Fontenot or Theriot freed up a shitload of money for them to spend either.

The trade of Fontenot opens up a spot for Triple-A Iowa shortstop Darwin Barney, who will join the club on Thursday.
From the article.
Don't know dick about Barney. I assume he can play SS and 2B. Any info on this dude?

Barney is supposed to be legit.

Never thought I would hear him called a giant.
This is awesome though. Now the only 2 reasons I've ever had to pull for the cubs are in California. So, I can go back to hoping they lose every game thats not against the Phillies

Barney was on those Oregon St CWS teams

I've followed their minor league affiliates more than the major leaguers this year because of how much the Cubs have sucked.
Their 3 best guys are already in the majors.(Castro, Cashner and Colvin who came out of nowhere)
They have some #3-5 type rotation pitchers in the system but its pretty slim after that.
Vitters was called up to Double-A early in the season and really hasnt handled it well
Their 1st rounder from this year hasnt pitched yet last time i checked. He caught mono or something right after we picked him.
Youd think they'd try to pull some better prospects in these deals

They have some decent young guys at Iowa right now. Barney is up now, and Snyder and LaHair look like they can hit a little bit too, and both are still pretty young. But, you're right, there isn't much in the farm system to get overly excited about right now.

Yeah they have some major league hitters down there. But no real 3-5 in the lineup type guys, unless you count Vitters.
They need to put Vitters and some of those other guys on whatever workout plan they put Colvin on. He put on a bunch of muscle(I dont care how) and developed a bunch of power out of nowhere

quote:I'm just spitballin' here, but it could be that the prospects the Cubs got in return are in large part due to the fact that Mike Fontenot and Ryan Theriot are fairly shitty baseball players. Did you expect the Cubs to get Andre Ethier from the Dodgers or Buster Posey from the Giants? C'mon.

Toula, I don't know much about Darwin Barney, but he's got a fantastic name. Anyway, he's only 24 and can play multiple positions. He's a career .285 hitter, but his OPS is .707. His line for the year so far at Iowa:
.297 .331 .377 .708, 2 HR and 49 RBI, 24 2B, 23/52 BB/K. He's played most of his games at SS and according to the limited defensive metrics I could find, he's Ryan Theriot.
