...to scratch off one of my worries for this years team.
LSU DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR JOHN CHAVIS

Nevis, Brockers and Davenport.
Who else?
Who else?

Davenport.
How is his spring going? Have the coaches commented on him much?

Can't really spit off the top of my head who the players are but if a man who has coached in the SEC for 21 years says this about his guys...I believe him.
He is not one to blow smoke either. Just watch one interview with him and you know he is a straight shooter.

This is all that was said about him...

and two of the names I'll mention are Bennie Logan and Chris Davenport. Both of those guys need to come on because it's going to be very important for us as we go through a tough SEC season
and...

Certainly Chris Davenport is not out of the mix. We are talking about playing six tackles, and we are pushing hard for him to come to the front. I hope he does. He has ability. He's still got a ways to go yet, and coach Haley is working with him everyday, but he's a guy that we have not given up on. We need to get him ready to play for us. He needs to be a force for us.
So apparently he is not quite there yet and needs the work.

6 DTs.. Davenport, Brockers, Logan, Nevis, Pep, and Ego/Copeland
I'd bet that the one of Ego/Copeland will get snaps this year. Davenport will be in on short distance/goal line stuff.

Levingston - 6'4, 280
Downs - 6'1, 278
Logan - 6'3 280
Copeland - 6'1, 275
Don't see another run plugger in there. However, maybe he is talking about Ego Ferguson and/or Dennis Johnson.
I know the coaches promised Ego he would play DE, but at 6'3 286, hell no.

" Michael Brockers is a 300-pounder that I guarantee you'll be impressed with. We've got enough size inside that we're going to be able to hold the point and get done what we need to get done there." NICE

Hmmmmm dont sound too good, sounds like hes trying to motivate him
"There's no question this defense is as big and strong as any I've been around and maybe as fast as fast as any I've had"
Lets hope they back that up and dont be like last years OL.

Two totally different people making these statements. I would like to think that Chavis knows what he is talking about.

"Let me tell you where we kind of came up short on third down. It wasn't third and long.We finished at 75 percent. When I say third and long, we are talking about six or more yards. That's pretty good. Eighty percent is going to put you in the top of the country, so we can improve a little bit there. Where we didn't was third and short. We need to improve our third and short and then our third and medium, three to six yards. We were not very good in that area, and that's an area that we are going to focus on. When you start talking about third and three to six or four or five yards, there a lot of things that can happen. You've got to be able to handle a lot of situations, and that will be an area that we definitely improve, but to go back an answer your question, yes third down is a big down. We chart it. We chart first down."
Wow, how refreshing is that? An LSU coach using logic and stats to make a point. Sounds like he has a clue to me...

"There is no doubt, and let me say this. You don't have to be a 300-pounder to be a great player in the SEC. As a matter of fact, I think you will find most of the guys are not. There is a premium on speed. I said earlier that our philosophy is that we are going to stop the run with numbers. We try to get unblocked players in the box. We are going to load the box. We are going to do those things, and what it does is force you to put your corners on an island. They've got to be able to play man-to-man, and that's where you have to be able to hold up. As long as we can hold up outside, I have no concerns about what we have inside. I do think that we have some people that can hold the point, match up and play SEC football. There's no question this defense is as big and strong as any I've been around and maybe as fast as fast as any I've had."
Does this help you out then?
Posted on 8/11/10 at 1:47 pm to LsuTool
That was kinda the only concern I had on defense because for the past some odd years, we would be gashed by good backs. We need to be able to stop these running backs who constantly go over a hundred yards on us.

But I always heard size doesn't matter.
Pretty sure LSU's DL & DB's will bring it this year.
