| How to kill mold on porous surfaces (Posted on 7/15/10 at 1:28 pm)
and no, bleach didn't work. I googled it and have not come across too much helpful information. I was just wondering if any experts on here have had this problem before and what they used to remedy it? TIA

just looked it up, only non-porous surfaces, thanks though. I'll probably try it anyway

Gotta dry it out after each bleaching. Repeat SEVERAL TIMES. Then keep the area as dry as possible.

What porous surface? Muriatic acid will kill most anything, including your porous surface if you're not careful. You can get it a Lowes.

Try Muriatic Acid. Smaller molecule than bleach (HCl). Get some at any swimming pool supply store.

The only was to get it off the drywall is to cut it out.

this is the correct answer then replace with green rock. certainly more labor thatn you were looking for but if the backside of the drywall (brown paper backing) is molded and wet, which I assure you it is, then this is the only option. If the molded wall has insulation in it you will need to remove it too. The studs if molded and wet should come out but can remain if you cn sufficently dry them out before reinstallng new drywall and moisture barrier. for a temporary bathroom I reccomend a 5 gallon bucket, two 12" pieces of 2x4, a roll of TP, and a can of OFF. Man up, your in for some work.

Need pics of contamination for a better consult, although wickowick and bleeding purple have given correct advice.

Sorry, but to easy solution. These were the code specifications we are required to follow with any sustained water damage repair with evidence of mold: 1) follow posters advice and remove wet rock. Depending on the cause, replace with either moisture resistant rock or a cementous board (HardiBoard or similar). If cause of moisture is overspray from shower or leaking faucet / shower pan, recommend HardiBoard. 2). After removing rock and insulation, treat raw wood and related areas with a mold abatement spray, such as "ShockWave". Any commercial paint store should have it. Bleach/JoMax/Others will not kill most molds, just cleans the surface. 3). Encapsulate the cells with some sort of oil based coating. It sounds like you are going to always be fighting a humidity problem in this bath, and unless you are able to keep humidity levels below 30% for a continuous 5 day cycle, spores may reappear. The less cells holding moisture, the less likely future growth. 4) before painting, coat with a moisture barrier similar to that used as a pre- treatment for tile/stone. There are a few web sites relating to water damage that have this procedure outlined. When I get back to the office this evening, I'll forwRd the link. Good Luck

Never use bleach. It has more water in it than the other stuff that kills the mold. The water promotes the growth of more bleach. Use 409; works for me.

only option if you cant dry it.

Kilz oil based works well here too and will allow latex over coat should you desire.

Add an attic ven in the bahroom and turn it on when you take a shower or bath to reduce the humidity in the room. Also if there is no A/C vent or distribution to the bathroom you may want to add one. when you finally pain the dry wall or hardiboard of the final coat use a semigloss for durability.
