Purke was drafted 14th overall last year in the MLB draft and turned down over 4 million dollars to go to TCU to play baseball instead. Rivals tabbed him as the top high school prospect in the nation last year yet he still came to college.

Yesterday Purke pitched 7 2/3 innings and allowed just 3 hits and 1 run while striking out 11 in TCU's 3-1 win over Texas in the super regionals. Purke has had a pretty good season. Although I must admit wondering why he turned down 4+ mil to play just baseball at TCU.

This is encouraging to see, hopefully Zach Lee sees the draw of football AND baseball at LSU.

Great for Mr. Purke, however, I question the intelligence of anyone that turns down $4 million so they can pitch against college talent.

Hence why I dont understand it either. But it makes me feel encouraged about Zach Lee considering he has football to think about on top of baseball.

Did it ever occur to you that money may not be the most important thing in the world to him?

Im sure career is the most important thing as is for most folks thinking about their future and you dont turn down 4+ million being drafted in the Top 15 to play just baseball in college. All you're doing is risking injury and possibly ruining your opportunity that you passed up on. It's not like he can improve his money or draft stock much.

If he doesn't think as you think, he must be dumb. That what you are saying?

Yeah, what a dumb frick he is! Maybe you should rent yourself out to him so he can live his life through you. At worst you could advise him and set him straight. It's obvious he's had no decent role models in his life to this point.

And if Zach Lee should follow his example, I guess you won't want him anymore either because it would then be obvious he ain't got a brain in his head either!

texas kids view college than other states.and the parents do too.alot of kids need to experience college and get a degree.every kid is different though.i would have thought von rosenburg would have been at lsu and he took the money and the zachary school system is as close to a texas kids situation.i heard his family was well off and he could have chosen lsu over the money but he chose the pros so i guess we shall see.

Was this really necessary? Anyone who knows baseball knows you don't turn down that kind of money and draft position out of high school to play just baseball in college. The risk is way greater than the reward.

All my point was is it's encouraging to see this for the Zach Lee situation considering Lee is going to be offered way less than 4 million and has football on top of baseball to think about in college. I say this because obviously I care what's best for LSU.

Lee was selected 28th and the number floating around that they'd need to sign him is in the 5 million range...

Purke was selected 14th and they offered him 4mil...

I don't blame him in the slightest for refusing that crap.

ETA:

Fixed figure after fact-check.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings.

Not everybody is obsessed with how much money they can make in life. The kid obviouly has other things in his life that are important to him and he is willing to take the chances and risks associated with gaining them. That doesn't mean he's stupid or foolish. I'm sure he and his family are well aware of the fact that he might get injured or whatever and the opportunity to play pro ball may disappear. But if he is willing to take that risk, it's his business.

He can still go to college. I just think he and those advising him a not the brightest. If your goal is to be a major league pitcher. Why not get your $4 million and pitch against others of similar talent? Go to college in the offseason and get a degree. He would be a much better pitcher after 3 yrs of minor league ball as compared to 3 yrs of college ball. He would have better coaches and better competition.

I never claimed it isn't his own business. I'm just saying, as anyone who knows baseball, it's a bad career move. Which it is.

lets take josh booty as an example.i think he would have helped him to enroll out of high school and play both sports at lsu than take the florida marlins offer.i think it hurt his business.

Cole Green was undrafted out of high school. So, no, he probably made the right choice coming to school considering he didn't even have an MLB option out of high school.

Pretty poor comparison.
