Lets just say LA Dodgers drafted Zach Lee knowing they could not pay him and won't sign him giving them another 1st round pick next year. Is that not a total dick move towards this kid who could have signed for millions with another team late in the 1st or early 2nd round. They knew approx. what his asking price would be before they drafted him. Don't get me worng I really want him at LSU but what if he gets hurt on his 1st snap and never earns a penny b/c the dodgers broke asses could not sign him. The dodgers may give him what he is asking but I just dont see it happening.

Yea it is a dick move, but the fact is if he does not want to be signed then in the long run it wont matter because it was his decision that invoked this pick.

Now, if he gets hurt on the first play and never earns a dime that would just suck balls for all involved.

He'll have an insurance policy for around the amt of a first round player would get. So not all is lost if he does get injured.

What do you not understand? The Dodgers possibly drafted a kid that is possibly worth millions of dollars knowing they wont sign him while another team would have come up with the money he is asking. Pretty dick and selfish imo.

I would be surprised if Lloyd's insures him for anywhere near $2M.

Yeah, its not wrong. The kid and the organization will do whats best for them. The organization could just wait till they have better financial footing, next year, or Lee could just have to live on a couple million dollars. Or Lee could spend the best years of his life in college, like most other warm-blooded humans.

The point is why use a top round guy as your whipping boy. Why not draft a kid who has no chance to sign a MLB contract and you know will play at some small college and just not pay him and nothing is harmed here?

because then they look cheap and what they are doing is obvious. they cant blame it on the guy being "unsignable"

It's only a dick move if they fail to offer him a contract that would be appropriate for the 28th player selected in the draft.

Lee says he wants $3 to $5 million, which implies he wants a premium to his draft slot in order to forego playing football at LSU. The corollary to that is that the opportunity to play football at LSU has a value to Zach that appears to be the delta between what a 28th pick should get and ~$3 million.

Simple answer is that the Dodgers had to make the decision that was best for thier business interests. If drafting Lee was the best business decision for the organization, then so be it. It's tough that Lee has to be the pawn in the game so to speak, but unfortuantely thats the way it goes sometimes.

Was it a dick move on Zach Lee's part to say that he wanted to play football unless payed uber amounts of money? The Dodgers would only be taking advantage of what he started. Plus, the Dodgers will offer him a good amount of money to sign their first round pick. It's not like they are going to say, "Oh, he's playing football, we didn't know oh well. Let's not waste our time on even offering him a contract." It's up to Lee to see what he wants to take to play baseball. And I look at this as some negotiating leverage on the Dodgers part to counter his demand.

Risky moves by both parties, but leverage for each.

At least they drafted a kid who intentionally set his tag too high because he wanted to play college football. More of a dick move if they did it to someone who strictly wanted to be drafted.
