I'm pretty sure this is the only arena that turns off the lights in the crowd. What's the deal behind this? Does this have something to do with the "Showtime" nickname? Also, is it like that for Clippers games?

Started it in 05 I think

"LightsOut" theme

Puts all the attention on the court

I personally hate it. It seems dark and depressing and I think has an affect on the crowd support and interactions and such

Staples Center is dead during Laker games when the game is close. Not a lot of energy in the building until the end of the 4th or if the Lakers are blowing somebody out

Yea, I figured the point was to focus attention on the court. I agree. Its seems the fans don't get into the game as much as fans at other arenas

this is because the people who are rich enough to get into Lakers games during the playoffs are probably douches to begin with

Yeah, I really don't care how into it the Lakers fans are, so if it looks cool I'm for it. I think it looks pretty damn cool with the focus being on the court.

they refer to it as "stage lighting". puts more emphasis on the court and less on the fans in the seats...every arena should do the same and cut out all the stupid arse bits they do at games.

I want to say they did that during the Magic era when they played at the forum.

When I went to a Bucks game at Bradley Center back in the late 90s they had stage lighting there too (or maybe it was just darker than NBA arenas are today).

Not anymore though.
