I've been a movie nut for a long time and I teach a film class on the college level and I have to say that I can't remember when the state of American movies has been worse. There doesn't seem to be an original idea anywhere. Shrek 4, Sex and the City 2, Ironman 2, Nightmare on Elm Street (remake), Twilight 3, and so on. (Yes I am aware that there are good movies still being made but you have to go to an arthouse theater in Manhattan to see them. They don't play here. We do have Shrek 4 on fifteen screens in Baton Rouge however!)

Check out some of the more popular movies from the decade of the 1980's: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Ghostbusters, Poltergeist, E.T., Aliens, Back to the Future, Ghandhi, Platoon, The Last Emperor, Blues Brothers, Good Morning Vietnam, and Die Hard, just to mention a few. Can you name even five movies from the decade of the 2000's that you would put in this class?

I do agree with you to an extent. There isn't a single movie coming out this summer that I'm even remotely excited about with the exception of maybe 1 or 2 movies. But luckily, mainstream Hollywood movies is really the only area in the world of film that is creatively bankrupt. There are still tons of good movies that come out every year whether it is from another country or in floating around film festivals.

Pans Labyrinth
City of God
House of Flying Daggers/Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Batman Begings/TDK (obviously not original but reinvented)
The Prestige
Snatch
Nemo/Up
Anchorman
Sin City
Shutter Island
I could go on for a while.
The 2000's have been a hot topic of late. I don't argue that it was the best decade for movies ever. But there are a ton of movies from the 2000's that I really really enjoy.
