Hoover - places to stay, eat, and things to do

Now that we made it to Hoover, any new places to eat this year? Or gems from years past?
How about things to do for kids and or teens when not at the park?
And place to stay for those that need that info.

Last year we stayed at the Residence Inn in Hoover and will stay there this year as well.
We always eat at least once at a Cajun place not too far from the park but I don't remember the name.
And good bbq places around?

The cajun place is Cajun Steamer at the Patton Creek shopping center. On Tap is a great place for Wings and they've opened a location where Ted's Buffalo used to be across from the Winfrey Hotel, I think it's smoke-free though. If you go South on 31 from the Mall, a new strip center has opened. There is a 5 Guys and a place called Baja Burger (order the lamb burger).
The BBQ scene hasn't really changed (sucks around the mall area). If you want to venture out from central Hoover, check out Miss Myra's, which is behind the Summit.
Also on 280 a place called The Tiltled Kilt has opened. Haven't been there but it is supposed to be Hooters-like. Don't forget Superior Grill on 280, and a new place has opened further down 280 called Chuck's Fish.
More contemporary/upscale favorites if you venture to the downtown area are Surin West and Hot and Hot Fish Club.
Plenty of good Mexican around. Iguana is on 150 going away from the Mall (opposite the way to the Met). Habenaro's on 31 and Sol Azteca in Vestavia are both good spots.

Places to stay:
Hoover and 280 is flooded with places
Places to eat:
Your same ol if you've been to Hoover before. Jim and Nick's is a great BBQ place that's close to the park. Baja Burger is good stuff as well. The best Cajun grub is on 280, Rajin Cajun's (its in the shopping center across 280 from Home depot). It's a NOLA kinda place, hole in the wall and good food. ForeLSU gave a good summary for the rest.
Shite to do:
Ross Bridge for golf, Patton Creek for shops etc,

Well the theme/water park (Alabama Adventures) is not too far away from the Stadium (about 10 miles or so off Academy Drive in Bessemer). You have the McWane Center in downtown B'ham. Point Mallard in Shelby County.
Eats: There are lots of good eats, Dreamland, Bob Sykes, plenty of restaurants round the Galleria area as well.

Full Moon BBQ in Hoover would be my recommendation.

The only decent BBQ I have had in the past 5 years of living here is a place called Top Hat BBQ. A real hole in the wall about 30 minutes North of Bham in Blount County. It was good.
Jim and Nicks - meh average and over priced
Full Moon - way too sweet
Dreamland - not good
There is no decent cajun food here at all. None! just stick to the bbq or you will be very disappointed. I am from Lafayette and speak from experience. I have tried it all and none of it is good. Crazy Cajuns, Jubilee Joes, and Cajun Steamers all average to turrible.
Steer clear of "Cajun" food up here. Try Michaels by the Galleria, Leonardos is great Itallian, Salvatores on 31 -great pizza, Superior grill on 280 is good, and try Hamburger Haven. Also they just opened up a 5 Guys Burgers and Fries on 31 near the Galleria.

You are right in the heart of Cracker Barrel country. What else do you need?

There IS a Piccadilly in Hoover that has a breakfast buffet.

born and raised in BR. lived in bham for 10 yrs.
Stay anywhere on Hwy 150 - John Hawkins Pkwy. There are several new hotels and it is only a couple of miles from the stadium.
If you want somewhere really nice stay at the Renaissance at Ross Bridge. Especially if you play golf. It is a 10 min drive to the stadium.
Seafood:
The BEST place for seafood is New Orleans Seafood and Spirits in Vestavia by the Rave theater on Hwy 31. It is worth the short drive. It is the same owner that has 2 NO Seafood and Spirits in LA - 1 is in covington.
Cajun Steamer is close to the Stadium in Hoover it is pretty good. One of the ownwers is from LA.
Jubilee Joes is AWEFUL. It will be a waste of your time and money. He is not even from LA. Seafood is better at Piccadilly.
BBQ - Full Moon on Hwy 31 is good.
Moe's BBQ on Hwy 150

The New Orleans Food & Spirits in Vestavia is the best Cajun Food in town. It's a New Orleans restaurant and this is the only one outside Louisiana. It's by the big movie theatre on Kentucky Ave right off 31. Also Superior Cocina in Brookwood is an upscale version of superior grille.

Full Moon BBQ is awesome. Its on 280 I believe and they treat tourney guests very well... They gave us free cookies last year when we went in our LSU clothes

Golf Courses...can we talk more about that for those in the know ? Public courses and prices, where should I play. Not looking to play for over 50 bucks though...its pretty much my limit considering I don't think its a good investment to pay 70 bucks and suck for 4 hours..

we are thinking about heading over there early thurs morning. How long is the drive and should we stay in hoover or try one of the bigger cities close by?
