Who's poised to make the jump to stardom, or at least non-obscurity? Can be any genre...and just for kicks- also solo artists as well?

Fleet Foxes are pretty badass, and I don't typically listen to that type of music.

How about Pneuma Trio, Zoogma, or Moon Taxi.

Pneuma is already kind of big. Zoogma is local to Oxford, but put on a show and just signed a bigger label I believe. Moon Taxi is more mainstream, but still awesome. They play in Oxford a good bit and the shows are always a party.

The National is my favorite band currently making music. I expect their new release (next Tuesday) to bring them their most exposure and mainstream success yet.

The Features.
They opened for Manchestar Orchestra when I saw them in concert 2 months ago and blew me away. They were rediculous how much they jamed live. Actually sound much better live than they do on cd.

I went to see Brand New in concert and got hipped to Manchestar. Went later on and saw Manchestar and got hipped to the Features. I have a feeling their going to get a good fan base. They are doing things right.

When every song you put out gets overplayed on every radio station. You dont need to be mentioned in this thread.

He has put out one album and has 3 or 4 songs on the radio.

Still counts as on the rise.

such an indie kid statement to make. Why the hell does it matter if the music you like gets popular? Such a stupid reason to stop liking a band.

Whoever said they like fleet foxes should check out Local Natives. They are another new band with a similar vibe.

It's more that I know that most of my favorite bands don't care to make it big. Would they love to have a ton of money, sure. But it's more importany they focus on making/writing good music and putting on a good show. Not just becoming filthy rich. Like Joe Purdy for example... Only let's his music played on select stations. Just doesn't want that image. But yet he makes great album after great album.
And I'm sorry but when bands become mainstream they change, it's a simple as that. Green Day used to be a good punk band. Now all they put out is political pop crap that I have to change the station when it comes on. Or Weezer. Again, another band that had some rediculously good albums. But now it's like they just pump out pop albums with terrible lyrics to make money of early success.
And I'm not saying I don't like some mainstream bands. I'm not that stuck up. I just prefer bands that aren't.

I believe that was me. And I live in Oxford, though I don't like Bingham that much.

Railroad Earth is my favorite band. 2 sets at Wakarusa this summer

Nice. I didn't know who it was, but they are awesome. I will be at Wakarusa too. In laws have a house on Lake Dardanelle, which is only about 15 minutes away from the festival.

Not to sound like a 28 year old creeper, but what bar will have the most people/women on a Thursday night in Oxford? I've done the Library thing a 100 times, but never on a Thursday.

Apologies for a semi-thread hijack to the OP.

I agree with you 100% that bands should be all about the music and not about trying to get popular. I disagree with you in that bands that become mainstream somehow become awful. It's true that money and fame probably influence a lot of these bands and they in turn make an album that fans will like, instead of making an album with integrity. But STILL, if this is the case then the music is bad because it is bad, not because a lot of people like it.

Case in point - Radiohead. They have achieved a lot of mainstream success and have still stayed true to their artistic integrity. Should you not like them because they are popular? No! All of their albums are great and that is what it should be about.

I even disagree with what I said. I should have been a little more clear. A lot of bands change. A lot don't. Ala Radiohead and Pearl Jam. And those are two of my favorite bands bc they have stuck to their roots.
But bc a lot of bands do change I'm being selfish in not wanting my favorite bands to blow up bc of the possibility of them changing. And in turn putting out completely different music from what I have come to love about them.

I see what you are saying and I see your point.

The way I see it is that if a band lets money get to them then they didn't give a shite about their music in the first place. However, those albums before they became shitty = gold - ala Weezer blue album and pinkerton, incubus, etc.
