Recommendations on Accountant

My business is needing to bring on an in-house accountant. We are looking for a part-time person to help with receivables, payables, and payroll. If you have any recommendations that would be great! Earlier on this board someone mentioned a father and daughter group that they used?

A couple of questions:
1. Are you looking to pay admin salary or accountant salary?
2. Is it real basic accounting work? A staffing agency might be an easy route to find what you're looking for.

Is this a long term position? Hiring a part time accountant in house can be tough unless you don't care what hours they work. For example, if you would let them work around a current work schedule to make extra on the side.

Otherwise, you won't get someone that is too qualified most likely unless you hired a full time position IMO.

This is going to be a long term position. I do not have enough for a full time accountant but I am looking for someone to grow with me, about 20 hours per week. He or she could work me into or around their schedule. I do not need someone to be here the same time everyday, it could vary. Thanks and keep the help and questions coming!

I am looking toward building a longterm relationship. I have a great CPA that is slowing down due to health concerns that will still do all the taxes. I do not feel a staffing agency is the direction I want to go.

What exactly are you looking for?? Are you looking for someone to cut checks and call about receivables? Do you need help with invoicing customers? What type of accounting software are you using?

We use peachtree. The accounting work will be payroll organization (we have payroll company that cuts checks), 401K, insurances, bills, organization of bills for tax purposes, profit loss statements, ect. We actually run two businesses so the paperwork is getting hectic.

I'd ask your CPA for recommendations. He might have some contacts in the area.

Robert Half Financial staffers might be able to help you out as well.

It sounds like you just need a bookkeeper and not an accountant. All the items you mentioned could be done by an experienced bookkeeper. I would put an ad on craigslist explaining what you need done and go from there.

You might consider hiring an LSU accounting student and use your current CPA to guide the student as needed. My experience is that few bookkeepers have the skills to oversee the payroll function when 401(k) plans are involved. While an LSU student would also lack those skills they would be more likely to learn the requirements and avoid any costly mistakes.

Please discuss this option with your CPA. He may like the idea of mentoring an intern, and you may find yourself a potential full time accountant should your businesses grow.

This is how I started. It provides a great schedule for students. They can come in and work 3-4 hours a day.
However, the company I worked for never grew large enough to necessitate a full time accountant. The company was capable of paying me half of what they would pay an experienced bookkeeper.
The only thing he asked me was to give him a couple of months notice when I graduated and decided to leave, so I could train a new hire.

Poodle, when I first read this part I was scratching my head wondering why anyone would do this. But when I read the rest of your post it made perfect sense.

I would think this sort of arrangement depends on good communication between the CPA and the firm and the student. You'd need a CPA willing to make the time, be available, etc. and so the choice of mentor would be more important than the student. That said, it sounds like a great idea if that can be done.
