So when I used my AC unit for the first time this year, I noticed a bad sour smell with it. It did not go away with repeated use, so i called an HVAC company out to check it out. They did not find anything with the AC unit, and thought it might be moisture in the ducts causing the smell. They recommended a duct cleaning... Anybody have experience with this problem or with duct cleaners? I hear that duct cleaning can be a little sketchy. And any idea of the price to be expected for a 1700 s.f. house?

i just went thru the same thing, keep running it and it will go away. get up in the attic and take the cover off, you'll spray Odo-Ban into the portion that has the vents/coils, opposite the blower side. Then let it run.

Unless you see mildew around your vents, you should be ok.

i was also told that it could be pulling a bad odor from the pvc pipes/"pee trap". but probably not...

25 years old....I have run it for several hours and the smell is just as strong out of the vents as when I started it.

Does it smell like an old vacuum cleaner bag?

Does not smell like a vacuum bag, more like sour milk.

Hard piped? From some of the prices I've heard, you can replace the ductwork with flex for less. If the smell is from something inside the unit, this won't help you with the odor.

I am wondering if it would be less to replace them..... The HVAC company that came out said the unit was fine, not to mention I had the coil replaced last summer.

No they think it is coming from the ducts and said the unit looked ok.

Common problem. Called 'dirty socks' smell.

Running it should do the trick. Happens going from heat to a/c.

Any good a/c company should be able to handle it.

I have tried running it several times, the last time for about 2 hours continuously. And it was just as bad at the end....And when I say bad, I mean makes you cough and gag bad.

Seriously, try a couple to three days.

Open the windows while the getting is good!

25 year old unit - probably need a new one.

I've been told 90% of duct cleaning work done is unnecessary.

Have you been pouring Clorox through the pvc pipe every six months to stop mold?

I have someone coming out to look at it (again) in a couple of days. In the meantime, I ran the air for about 2 hours continuously..It still stunk after running it, I did notice what appears to be a leak where a pipe attaches to the unit(possible freon??), although that could just be condensation from running the unit continuously.

As far as cleaning PVC pipes frequently, that is above my education level and I don't see what pipes I would clean out on the unit. Also, I only moved into the house last summer.
