Do you think SPORTCENTER has damaged some of America's youth?

Here me out on this one. Me and a friend were discussing this the other day, how kids now-a-days don't focus on the fundamentals of the game. They really just want to cross somebody over in basketball or really juke someone out in football. Also, when I was a kid, I would watch a WHOLE football game. Alot of neighborood kids just come in and watch bits and pieces of the game, even if LSU is playing.

So, I guess my point is, with Sportscenter being so very popular, with the highlights and then the top plays, and the jacked up and sorts: I think alot of kids today, in their mind, see sports as just some highlight show. Sure, the great plays are awesome, but that's NOT sports!! Sports is not only the game, its the drills, the practices, the working hard and not letting someone out-work you or out-hustle you.

What do you guys think?

a kid's attention span is less than an adults, and the average adult's attention span is around 20 minutes, so just let them grow

I think it comes down to competetive spirit. If winning is more important than the rest then it will show in performance. If highlights are #1 than w/l record will reflect this

It's not just SportCenter, it's everything. It's sound bite world we live in. We don't even spell out our words anymore. KWIM.

F no. any coach knows that he or she cant win with and1 type shite. the fundementals have to be learned or else the player will get ponged by educated players.

The crossover in basketball is fundamental.

My son spent 6 hours today at a gym working on his fundamentals. He'll spend another 4 hours tomorrow doing the same prior to AAU tryouts tomorrow night.

The kids that want to be players work on fundamentals all the time. Mastering fundamentals allows them to do the advanced stuff you see on TV.

Of course, this is my take on the matter as the dad of a gym rat.

I hope he wants to do that and you're not living through him?

If so, congrats on having such a dedicated son.

A lot of kids just probably don't care enough about sports to dedicate as much time as needed in the first place. They're just kids. There are plenty that do care and play in the more competitive youth leagues.

We've always let him do things at the pace he chose. All I did was pay for what needed to be paid for (5 pairs of basketball shoes a year on average) and drive him to where he needed to be.

His goal is to play college basketball. He'll be a junior in high school next year and has the size at 6'5" but now he needs to do the extra work to separate himself from the pack to achieve his goal.

It's all on him. As long as his grades are in order and he still wants it I'll sit in the stands pretty much every freaking weekend and cheer for him.

Yea it's rare for kids to watch entire football games. That's way too long a time for them sit down and watch something with no enticing cartoons or visual stimutlants.

Sportscenter helps America's youth if anything I would say. It's a sort of gateway to allow them to be intrigued by the sports games. It takes the most exciting events of say a football game and consolidates them. Once they realize that they like what their watching they'll want to watch more and begin to develop a like for that sport. That like eventually evolves into a love for the game. That love will then devolve into various drunken SEC tailgate brawls. Ahh..the circle of life.

Well that's how it happened for me anyway and a lot of my friends growing up.

Considering Sports Center has been around since the 1980s, maybe that is the reason why players under 35 just want to play like what they see on there?

Sportscenter has been around for awhile, but clearly it is way, way more popular this day in age then when it first came out. Heck, they had to make 2 channels for it.

Anyway, in no way am I against Sportcenter. I freakin love it. Just random talk, and in my opinion I think there possibly could be some link to the way kids play now-a-days. I mean, I tried to be like Mike in my young days. Using alot of my times playing on 8.5 foot goals, bc I can't jump and dunk on 10 foot.

Its just obvious to me the 12-15 foot jumper is missing now-a-days, bc that rarely makes the "high-lites". Its the dunk or the "breaking someone's ankles".

I think the real problem with SportsCenter is that it has taught them that the only way they'll get attention is if they act like T.O., Chad Johnson, Danica Patrick, and Brett Favre.
