One time the pitch was made to Ridley and he had nowhere to go but out of bounds.

That's generally what happened last year.

The strange thing is that, when run to the wide side of the field, our option plays are pretty good.

I don't watch a ton of option football but is it always run to the wide side of the field? This seems highly predictable.

No, but it shouldn't be run to the short side of the field 90% of the time like Crowton calls it.

not expecting too much to change this year. as long as crowton and stud are on staff i'm not gonna have too much faith in our offense.

When run to the wide side of the field, our option plays aren't as terrible because we've got such incredible playmakers. Our execution of the option is borderline comical. High school offenses run it better.

The only option-based play we run well is the zone read and that's a completely different option play than the typical option we've become accustomed to. The worst part is Jefferson and Shep both run it incredibly well and are both exceptionally comfortable doing it (which neither are comfortable running our speed option). Combine that with the fact that the zone read is (IMHO) the best current offensive play in college football and it's borderline infuriating that we don't run it more.

Isn't the idea behind running it to the weak side is that you usually have one less guy to block against.. making your linemen more effective?

Just saying.. it may have been on our OL.

This is correct. The short side option was usually a sight adjustment based on the defensive alignment.

The execution was still very poor.

Yes and it lets your running back turn his shoulders north quicker

LOL @ anyone who thinks they know how to scheme an offense because they can run plays on X-box. Any scheme or play for that matter can be successfull is the players execute their assignment.

I'm guessing you only watched one half of one game.

and it prevents the defense from taking slants to take away cutbacks on the wide side. there is absolutely nothing wrong with running the option to the short side, if you're a good option team...which we're not.

THIS

I sure enjoy reading some posts that understand WHY our option is not successful. It has little or nothing to do with what side it is run. We do NOT execute.

Anyone that mentions "short side" as a problem is cool though, it makes it easy to spot the ones to disregard in matters football related.
