I ordered a sandwich with a water at a local Baton Rouge eatery. They took a while to bring out the food, but it wasn't unreasonably long. I ate my food...good but not great. When I got the bill, it included the price of the sandwich AND a drink. Remember, I did not order a drink. I told the waitress that she included a drink on my bill by mistake, and she said she would fix it as she took my credit card.

When I got my receipt, the drink was still included.

What would you do?

a) Ask her to remove the drink from the receipt, and leave no tip.
b) Pay for the drink and leave no tip.
c) Pay for the drink and leave a tip.

Well this will open a can of worms with all the servers and ex servers on the board and they will tell you how hard a job it is and that you should leave at least 50% tip and just feel sorry for the server as she was just having a bad day, I would again bring it to his/her attention and if everything else went alright I would leave a reduced tip 8-10%

Is water not a drink? Jesus, tip to the pre-tax total.

As far as operating expenses are concerned, it sure as hell is one.

I would probably not want to waste the time dealing with getting the airhead to remove the drink off of the tab and just leave her $1 and move on.

I love that he actually assumed going in that he was getting a free drink.

I have never assumed that I would be charged for a glass of water

Why wouldn't you? I know a good deal of places are nice enough to allow you free water, but the fact of the matter is that it costs them almost as much in overhead costs.

Why would you walk into any establishment and assume something was free?

ETA: And, cheap asses are also conceding that they should be allowed to tip less (by not having a drink on the bill). The server is still required to just as much, if not more, work.

History, I have never been charged for a glass of water, also in refrence to the OP, if the waitress would of told him when he first got the bill that they charge for a glass of water that would of been diffrent (F'ed up but a diffrent situation) but she did not and said she would fix it and did not

no because she made an error, was asked about it told him she would change it and still f'ed it up.

I agree that tipping should not be on % of bill but on amount of service but once again history tells me to tip on % of bill

Is this situation any diffrent than some one ordering a burger with no ketchup on it, they bring the burger out with ketchup the patron brings to the servers attention, the server brings the burger back to the kitchen and then out to the table still with ketchup?

This reminds me of the free refill thread. Most casual BR places will send you off with a free refill in a go cup if you ask. I doubt they would consider charging for H2O.

I would deduct the price of the drink from the tip....If I could catch the waitperson....I would tell her," You forgot to take off for the water so I deducted it from the tip amount...You and the owner can work it out."

A mod moved it here... not sure why?

The "Diet Coke" cost me $1.50. Again, I ordered a water, and water is FREE. Until the menu says it costs money, I do not expect to pay for it. Since she made the mistake of adding the drink to my bill, and not removing it after I asked her to, I just payed the bill and left no tip.

I'm normally a tip at least 20%, but lessons must be taught!

I like that plan, and you can bet she would get the price of the drink taken off the tab and put in her tip jar then

Servers don't have authority to remove items from the bill. Would you have been okay if she had just told you that?
