The luge is freaking insane!

I've never really paid attention to it before. There has got to be something suicidal in the people that do this.

get up over 90mph with a pice of plastic under their arse

bullshite. You've never watched the "skeleton". They go head first on a creeper.

You do know that one of the Lugers from Georgia died on the course the day before the opening ceremony?

watching it now on NBC pretty interesting watching these crazy people, but the women i've seen are pretty good looking

My bad, it was the skeleton I was watching. Didn't realize there were 2 different categories. But yeah. That is intense.

Skeleton is head first, luge is feet first

You'd think that there would be more serious injuries in these two sports.
In general, the winter sports are so much more dangerous than the summer sports and basically all of our team sports besides football.

The skeleton is actually the "safest" of the 3, with luge being the most dangerous and bobsled 2nd most.
But, let's be honest, all 3 are crazy as shite.

How is going 90+mph head-first the safest?

I'll defer to someone who knows MUCH more than I do about the sport.
I'm friends with Joe Sisson. I've known him for about 5 years. He was in the Olympic trials in 2002 for the bobsled and had a nice future set up, especially for 2006 and 2010. He was in an accident that ended his career and almost killed him. Here's the ESPN article, not that anyone cares lol:

At any rate, in talking with him on IM, he told me all kinds of shite, way more than i needed to know, lol. But on this very topic, here is his exact quote:
quote:
Luge is also the fastest of the three and it is by far the most dangerous. Then comes bobsled, and last and by far the safest is Skeleton. Although it looks insane, the Skeleton is the slowest of all the sleds, it is only 3 inches off the ice providing a very low center of gravity and difficult to flip. If you do flip, you can roll back over onto the sled.
Dude knows his shite, so I'll just take his word for it, even though the Skeleton looks insanely dangerous.

Thanks for the post. Did your friend make a full recovery from his injuries? It sounds like his injury was fairly similar to Kevin Pearce's.

Yea, he says he is 99% recovered.
he originally said he was given 72 hours to live, then after that, said he'd never be the same, so he's pretty lucky.
Him and I both post on a much smaller message board. I don't know shite about any of these 3 sports, but he's given us so much insight to the ins and outs of the 3 sports since that accident last week, way more then I could even comprehend, lol.

I think the skeleton, you have less control, but with it being so low to the ground and the fact that it goes slower, it is much harder to crash.

More info that was given to me on the skeleton:
quote:
The way in which these athletes steer as far less control then the other two sports. The athletes press there knees and shoulders in to the sled and this creates a small flex in the sled, thus changing the runners and steering down the track. They also shift their body weight and this is the way in which they steer. Skeleton is the easiest to get down the hill and the safest of the three. As insane as it looks, they are only three inches off the ice and yes their chins drag on the ice during the corners pressure points (explained below). The sleds weight 90-100 pounds and provide a very low center of gravity and are very tough to flip. If you do flip the sled, you are holding on to it and can easily flip it back over.

They were saying after the guy died, that Skeleton is safer because you can put you feet down to slow down if you really have to which you can't do in luge

Do you mind linking it?
Glad to see he turned out fine from those serious injuries. I hope Pearce can recover as well. Right now they say that his brain damage is so severe that he can't walk 100% on his own yet, but I know big strides can be made in a short amount of time.
NBC didn't show him in their latest report though, so I assume he can't really speak well yet.

Sure.
Here's the 1st thread about the luge guy dying. Joe's name on the board is "Ice", fairly appropriate, lol.
Link is on the 2nd page, his post is near the bottom
Here's another link in our Olympics thread where he goes VERY in depth about halfway down this page and onto the next. A lot of reading, and answered a few of my quesitons.
It's good and interesting stuff, IMO:
