i have the 4th pick in a H2H league. the first 3 picks will be pujols, hanley, and arod. i'm considering taking mauer 4th. he's gonna have a huge year and there are so few stud catchers.

my other options would be howard or braun. i think mauer has a year on par with braun, but with a much better average and less steals. howard will hit more HRs, but everything else points to mauer. what do you think?

I wouldn't dare take Mauer in the 1st. He'll probably be available in the 2nd possibly 3rd, IMO.

No way do I take Mauer 4th. Catchers don't play every day like regular position players do. I think someone will end up taking him in the first round, but don't be that guy.

and this is why people need to do more research

as a mauer owner last year, he plays just about every day as he is the dh when he doesnt catch

Mauer doesn't miss games. But his preseason rank is around 17-20. Meaning late second round.

The new outdoor park scares me for Twins hitters. Cold weather is not favorable towards hitters, and it will be colder to start the season in Minny than anywhere else.

Regardless, you don't draft Mauer 4th in any draft under any scoring system that I can think of. Also, I don't think Mauer is going to have a season better than last. He'll still have a very good to great season and the best catcher season but I expect him to regress slightly or at best equal his HR total and RBIs.

Joe Mauer averages 133 games played a year. How's that for research?

Mauer will put up good numbers this year, but he won't blow anyone away. Even if someone takes him, you'll have other options at C later down the line and you'll get better value for the pick. I took Benji Molina in the 12th round last year and he scored plenty.

injuries?

he played just about EVERY game last year. and i know this bc ive already had this argument

hes a second roudn pick in OUR league, but in a standard average league, there is absolutely an argument to be made for him being a first rounder

Just off top oft head, did he not miss the first month or two of season last year from injury. I was able to "buy low" on him b/c of this post draft

He missed the first month because of a back injury. He then played in nearly every game at C or DH. Barring injury he should play around 150 games.

While he may be a 1st rounder in some leagues he is definitely not the 4th pick - that's insane.

It would be foolish to not take injury history into account when evaluating players.

His career high in games played is 146 and his low is 109.

Granted, he missed the first month of the season last year, and played nearly every game after that. But can you really count on him to do that again, much less post those numbers again?

So, when you factor in injury history, the new ballpark, and the chances of him duplicating last year, I can't see taking him in the first round in a 12 man league.

will trade me mauer

and redd, if you were to take mauer in the first round, you absolutely have to go ss or 2b with your next pick, as the whole strategy would be to get the thin spots first, with of and first being deep as shite

rouge, trade me some players

I'd agree with that.
