Is this True or False?
It was sent by a Bama buddy.
It was sent by a Bama buddy.

The original school was where the La state capitol is now located. The first president of what is now LSU was William Tecumseh Sherman, the famous March-to-the-Sea, burn Atlanta General. Of course, an off-shoot of Sherman's troops burned the University of Alabama.
LSU was moved to its present site when Huey Long decided to build a new capitol in the early 30's. The Tulane-dominated legislature refused to let Long build a football stadium. Long then proposed dorms with a huge quadrangle. That quadrangle is the field of Tiger Stadium and the old dorm buildings under the stadium are the dorms Long proposed. They were used as dorms until about 20 years ago.

from what i have always been told the huey long part is true

The stadium/dorms was a federal program that Long used in his favor to get the stadium built. Had nothing to do with local politics. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

nope. originally in Pineville.

Yes, he got funding for dorms and put a field in the middle of it. He also built the MS river bridge just short enough to force exxon, shell, etc. to have to re-locate here. Super tankers can't pass under the bridge.

Yes Ive heard this before. the dorms were built in an oval and then the bleachers were constructed on top of the "dorms".

Ehhhh, I don't think so...
1860 - Seminary of Learning of the State of Louisiana opens in Pineville on January 2 with 19 students under General Sherman before the Civil War
1869 - after a disasterous fire, the Seminary reopens at the State Institution for the Deaf and the Dumb and the Blind, its first location in Baton Rouge
1870 - the Seminary is renamed The Louisiana State University
1874 - Governor Kellogg signs a bill establishing the Louisiana State A&M College in New Orleans, which opens on the campus of the University of Louisiana in New Orleans (i.e., Tulane)
1877 - a bill merges the La. A&M College with The LSU, creating the new LSU & A&M College
1924 - LSU plays its first football game in new Tiger Stadium
1925 - the first classes begin moving to LSU's new campus (property was bought as early as 1918 in anticipation of the move); the last classes would finish moving there in 1932
1928 - Huey Long elected governor

Good stuff.

So did mine, I think, although by his time football games were already being played at the current stadium.

The only piece that I believe to be false is ...an off-shoot of Sherman's troops burned the University of Alabama. The Bama boy may want to look at the history channel or a history book.

The Standard Oil Refinery (now ExxonMobil) was built in Baton Rouge in 1909.
