When did Republicans and Democrats switch?

When did rebublicans become "conservative" and democrats become "liberal". I noticed recently when talking to my grandfather. He's a hardcore democrat, but he has republican ideals. The same is true for many of the older southern people I know. They vote Dem because thats what theyve always done, but they dont agree with the policies.

When did the ideology switch?

The ideology never really "switched," but the late 60's through early 80's was when a lot of neocon intellectuals and Southern traditionalists defected from the Democratic Party. The early 30's was when a lot of the minority vote switched from the GOP to the Democrats.

Probably after JFK and LBJ with the Great Society programs, and Barry Goldwater representing the Republicans in '64. But I really don't know. Ask an old-timer.

Really the modern parties began to set their political terrain ~100yrs ago. Certainly by the time of FDR. However, southern democrats held together as a party for 100 years following the Civil War until the mid 1960's. The LBJ Administration was likely the cause of the change you've referenced.

This is correct.

It sure wasn't because they admired John William Davis.

It started around 68 when the delgate rules to the COnvention were changed in the Dem party

A lot of the hawks and other sort of got forced out of the Dems

That also aided in displacing the Rockerfeller branch of the GOP when they migrated over

1. Who learns political history by asking questions on a message board?

2. The fallacy of doing that is made apparent when people talk about convention rules changes being responsible for the migration of conservatives out of the Democratic Party. Yeah, it was rule changes. It wasn't the fact that conservative Democrats were centered in the South and bailed because of civil rights.

Look at an electoral map of 1960 and see the swath of blue across the South, and then look at '64 in a Democratic landslide, where almost the only red you see is in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina.

The 30's was the start of it, but many blacks especially were hard-core republicans until the Nixon/JFK race in 1960. When MLK was arrested in Atlanta I believe, JFK was the first to go there and speak against his jailing. Nixon was a day or so behind. He didn't like it and wanted to go and speak against it as well but his advisors advised him to wait as to not tick off the southern 'blue dog' democrats. But the strategy backfired, you could run the devil as a democrat and Jesus as a republican and 95% of blacks would still vote for the dem. Whoever was advising Nixon back in the day ought to have his neck wrung. Screwed the pooch they did.

There is a lot more to it than that, spidey. But since it fits your ideology, believe it.
Blacks began to abandon the Republican party during the time of FDR because the depression was generally blamed on the Republicans and the Democrats promised a better economy. Many whites did the same. So the racial element was generally a wash.
As the Democrats drifted further and further left during the Vietnam war, white southern Democrats, who were more pro-war felt increasingly isolated by and within their party. They were also frightened by the runway spending on social programs such as the Great Society and the War on Poverty.
The GOP welcomed the defectors primarily based on the promise of fiscal conservativism. Was race a factor? Probably for some, but as much as spidey wants to castigate all Republicans as racists, it was not the primary factor in the cross over.
As in any political movement, there were many variables, but the politically immature canrely on the race card. It's easier and requires no for or after thought. And makes for sparkling one liners.

republicans didn't get elected in the deep south for 100 years because Lincoln freed the slaves. Southerners voted for Dixiecrats instead.
