1. If you make it, ball game.
2. If you don't fake, and you make a field goal, they have to go 70-75 yards to win.
3. If you miss, they have to go 65-70 yards for a chance to win.

The Saints basically gave up 5-10 yards for a chance to put the game on ice.

I like the call.

(Don't know how I missed that other thread. )

I've got to be the most stubborn arse on this site; I wouldn't have changed my mind, believe me.

But they only had to about 40 yards for a chance to tie. If we make the field goal, they have to go 70 yards. Terrilbe call. I would rather have Brees and real receivers out there than go for it.

I hated it more because it came after a couple bad play calls. Passing on 2nd down when we had been killing them with the run that drive was stupid. Forced us into a pass situation on 3rd and 7 and instead of a safe throw with the chance at the first, Brees tries to force one into the end zone to TE Thomas, who had no clue the ball was coming it looked like.

What REALLY pisses me off about the fake FG is Brunell being so stupid. The play worked, we had a man wide open for the easy first, and for whatever damn reason our backup QB had no inclination to actually throw the ball.

They took over at the 15. Assuming the 30-yard line is the point of a reasonably-likely fg attempt, that's 55 yards.

Ok, I was 10-15 yards off, but so were you.

There is not excuse for the play sequence up to, and including, the fake FG.

Run the clock down to 2:00 and force ATL to expend both remaining timeouts - if your FG kicker cannot get it thru the uprights from the 20 yd. line, we've got bigger problems ahead. No way in hell you don't take a 6 pt. lead, and force a ATL to go the distance with -0- timeouts, rather than give them a chance to tie (and later win) in overtime with 2 timeouts and the 2:00 warning and only maybe need to get to our 30 yd line ..... the odds for the Saints were definitely better to kick the FG.

4. You have not really stopped them all day. By kicking a field goal you force them to be aggressive and they have an extra down each set of downs to move the ball. Otherwise, they play more conservative and go for the tie. So in a way, you are securing that you at least get overtime if not put the game completely out of reach.

It was really stupid. I am sorry. If you go up by 6 you force them to drive the field. If you were going to fake it then the dumbasses should've run it on 2nd and 3rd down to make them burn their timeouts.

Even if we pick up a first down, they can still stop us and hold us to a FG and get in the same position but with less timeouts and time.

Again, when you don't take the points, you change their need to get from 65 yards to 35 yards to take it to OT. You gave them options at that point.

OK you're right about that. But odds are we wouldn't have missed the FG. They still would have probably had longer to go if we just make the FG.

Let's say you have a 95% chance of making the field goal and 50% chance of making the fake.

Kicking the field goal:
95% chance that you're up by 6, which yields probably a 15% chance that they drive for a touchdown and beat you.

Fake field goal:
50% chance you make it, which ends the game.
50% chance you miss it, which yields about a 20% chance that they kick a field goal to tie it, 5% chance they score a touchdown to beat you.

Good call.

Better chance of making the FG than getting the fake.

100% chance of winning if you call the fake (since we won).

Who knows if you don't?

I understand it...Just not sure if I agree with it.

I wouldn't have to balls call it.

Yeah, but you are ignoring the major factor which is with the FG you force a TD instead of a FG. From a pct standpoint that is a huge deal.

As it was, they were only about a 45 yard drive from a FG.
