I got to attend the game last night...1st of season.

Have we ben playing our safeties 20-25 yards deep all year?

Last night, Chad Jones was routinely lining up 20 yrds deep and then moving backwards on almost every snap. Late in the game, both safeties were lining up over 20 yds deep. We had no safety run support, and on passes less than 25 yds down the field, we had no safety over-the-top help. It looked to me like we were playing a strange prevent defense for the entire game.

It seems that any good QB would love playing 11 on 10 or 11 on 9.

Yes, but we never give up big plays.

Yes, they've been doing it all year. We covered the deep ball very well last night, except of two occasions, but why they didn't dink and dunk with the short crossing routes that were good on the first drive, I don't know.

I feel like you, we play 10 against 11 with our free safety 20 yards deep.

Mustang Package. Learn it. Live it. Love it. This is your LSU defense for as long as Chavis is here.

we were much better than a year ago. If we get some better play from the front front it will make our defense dominating.

Cover 2 like a lot of teams plays. Have to get more pressure from front four though.

My biggest question was why the three man D Line the last two drives. I thought four down linemen with two LB's with five DB's would have worked better.

i will say that the last drive, despite the touchdown, the Defense made better sense with LB's and Db's blitzing. Without the Personal Foul on Jones, it appeared we stop them and win outright.

My sarcasm detector is dinging...

We gave up a lot of big plays last night. But the plays that really hurt were the 3rd an long plays that they picked up after throwing short of the first down but running free due to no safety help.

maybe since the DL hasnt been able to get any pressure all year, he wanted another DB out there.

That was our only problem on defense, lack of pressure by front four.

I was also aggravated by the 3 man rush on the last two series. We gave a good QB way too much time IMHO.

The prevent defense appears to be Chavis's favorite scheme. For it to work, we will have to have much better D-line and LB play than we currently have.

i thought that was our best SEC game getting pressure. not too many sacks but we made mallet move around a lot.

The first half, we seemed to get to him, but whatever Arkansas did prevented us. Nevis and Levingston (sp?) seem to be the only two that can get past the line. Josh Downs has done well, before his injury and other young ones have also. Will the DL have better talent next year with the young ones taking over?

Notice we went back to the blitz in OT. Aggressive play shut down Arkansas for most of the game. I have no idea why he would consciously change to a passive defense with the game on the line in the 4th Quarter.

I've never liked the 20-25 yard drop of our safeties. True, it may help prevent the big play, but I think it also contributes to the "bend but don't break" long drives by our opponents. How many long "3rd and ..." did Arkansas make last night? I think, in part, that this is because our safety support takes longer to arrive, yielding extra yards on the crossing patterns and other plays.
