May have already been discussed but I'm not sure of the rule. When Lafell recovered the onside kick, he returned it inside Ole Miss territory. But they spotted the ball on the LSU 42. Probably where he first recovered it. Is the rule such that a recovery can't be advanced?

No, the kicking team cannot advance ANY kick or punt.

They changed the rule after someone (Tulane I think) ran one back for a TD

Not really, if this were the case, the kicking team would setup plays to do so all the time.
