Does anyone remember this bumper sticker? I'm guessing 60-70% of the posters on this forum weren't even born, yet.

"Up the middle, up the middle, up the middle, punt!" was the cheer du jour in the late '70's. It was winning football for Cholly Mac, but it was hardly exciting.

This lack of entertainment value and Cholly Mac's inability to beat The Bear led to his dismissal. There are some interesting parallels happening right now. In Mac's time there were no real buy-out clauses and I think he even got a new Cadillac on his way out the door. Things aren't quite so simple now and look for Les to be here for awhile unless he decides to go elsewhere. There're something like 16,000,000 reasons he will not be fired, give or take a few million. Deal with it, people and

I seem to remember the chant as:

"up the middle, around the end, pass, punt!!"

I also think a bigger factor in running him out was his inability to beat bama.

There's quite a few million more reasons why TAF will remove him if the team starts to dip and attendance/season ticket sales drop along with the win total. There is a lot of money tied up in bonds for all those nice new facilities that LSU is building, and TAF won't let Miles mess with the cash cow.

And they deal with it by not showing up to games, leaving early and not buying as much LSU shite.

So fans "dealing with it" can cost a program too.

Robiskie left, Robiskie right, Robiskie up the middle, punt.

Mac got the Cadillac a couple of years after he left when he returned to be honored at a football game.

"Help Mac Pack" bumper sticker

---and when he was fired and moving out of his house, a reporter (I think from the State-Times) was with him as Mac was putting a lamp in a box: Cholly reportedly said, " 'Hep Mac Pack'"--Where are those people NOW?"

Classy to the end---

Thanks for all the corrections my fellow old people. Its been 30 years and many brain cells ago...guess I can blame adventures in the steam tunnels and The Bayou for some of that. Les reminds me of Mac in so many ways, and I wonder if they ever met.

My greatest fear is that Les Miles will develop into another Charlie Mac.

Why the fear? Mac was great for the program, and it was a shame we couldn't beat The Bear and win a national championship while he was here. Les has been great for the program but if it gets too stagnant he'll be invited to retire early, also.

According to Les, Bo Schembechler was a friend of Charlie Mac, and Les certainly knew about him, but I don't know if Les ever met him.

wow. believe it or not, i was thinking today about the current LSU/Alabama rivalry and how it has the potential to be a very similar situation as the Mac/Bear days (i hate to say it...as much as the gumps might eat this up). alot of close losses, a win here and there....and always chasing Bama while they compete for national championships and LSU competes for really good bowl games.

Don't forget:

"I'm for an Archer departure"

"Rent a U-Haul for Stovall"

Don't remember the Curley nor Sweaty rhymes.

In our section it was "run left, run right, run up the middle, punt". And as someone said, "he couldn't beat the Bear so he's gotta go" is what it was about. Only problem is no one else was beating the Bear either!!!

It was...
Help Mac Pack

and it was pretty much.....
"run left, run right, run up the middle, punt".

Do you remember the WHY ?????

Mac had about an 80% winning %
...so you see IT IS NOT JUST THE RECORD.

that would be around an 8-3 (9-2) or so, for the number of games that were played in a season.

.......it was the inability to win when facing a CREATIVE team...i.e. Alabama (at that time)

'69-'73:
LSU won nine games in five consecutive seasons from 1969-73, but during that stretch, LSU won only one SEC
So a good record IS NOT ENOUGH

In my section in the north ez right next to the players' chute it was definitely up the middle, up the middle, up the middle punt! It had an unforgetable cadence.

During Mac's 18 years as HC of the Tigers he won 137 games. The only SEC team to win more games during that period was BAMA. LSU won more games during those 18 years than Florida, Tennessee, Auburn, Georgia, etc. Cholly Mac couldn't beat the Bear, but he was one damn fine football coach.

That is how I remember it as well.

"Help Mac Pack" and "Up the middle, Up the middle, Up the middle, Punt!"
