In a new article posted on TSD, Shep had this to say when asked if he will throw the ball at some point now that he plays WR as well...

quote:

“I could have gloves on one night or I can just not play another night. You never know with me,”

I wonder if that is part frustration on his part.

To be fair I do think the staff is trying to bring him along, sometimes at the expense of the offensive flow of the game. I agreed with Bob Davie on his comment about Crowton trying to do too much with Shep until I saw how fast he could blow the game open.

But he still has ways to go to match the production of Percy Harvin as a freshman:

quote:

Receiving
REC YDS AVG LNG TD
34 427 12.6 58 2
Rushing
ATT YDS AVG LNG TD
41 428 10.4 67 3

I think we will be seeing him at WR,RB and in the wildcat. As long as he is productive I dont care if we ever throws a pass in his whole career

Not bashing on Shep at all...But do you remember the Georgia game where the team had to call 2 timeout on the goal line when Shep when in to run the wild tiger...Shep needs to understand his role - How hard is it to run the wild tiger...Maybe the coaching staff was asking him to learn too much (RB, WR, WT) plays when they should have focused on one position - Wild Tiger...Also, I believe this is part of Sheps personality to toy with people...Keeping the suspense...Shep will play in all the remaining games - No Doubt

The question is how long will it take before the coaches are comfortable enough to put him out there?

In the 1st quarter the other night, it seemed to me that Les had been reading the rant and was trying to get back on their good side. It did seem like they were forcing it. Wasn't he in on the second play?

you can believe one thing. RS at running back can hit holes that charles scott and keiland williams will never get to. offensive linemen don't have to hold their blocks but just for a nanno-second for someone with shepards quickness. that said, the defense will try to take his head off when they get a shot on him. our opponents have been aware what he brings to the game, and he is a game changer for just in what the defense must defend when he is on the field. i hope crowton and miles find a way to get him a lot more snaps. we might have to give up the 3 yards and a could of scott dust to find those snaps

I'd love to see RS line up as RB, then throw a quick pass to him in the flat - get him the ball in space and see what he can do against a LB.

I've been wondering this for a few weeks now. Holliday is fast, but Shep is quick and can make those cuts that Holliday just seems unable to make.

i've been calling for this play (to the wide side of the field) all year long with RS or KW. we FINALLY ran it with KW last week and it went for like 20+ yards or so. as an old baseball coach, we charted every damn pitch in every damn game, even before PC's. surely, we chart every play and their results. i'm definately old school; i say use what works and reject what doesn't.

I think this weekend would be the perfect opportunity to let Shep throw the ball. Does two things gets him experience throwing it, and gives Bama one more wrinkle to think about.

Miles' comments on Shep at Monday's lunch...
quote:

On Russell Shepard’s transition into college ball...
“Well, it’s a very difficult one for anybody. What happens is when you’re in high school and you’re the player of the school, the high school coach coaches you, and the other guys get the information around and after you get it because certainly when we go out onto the field, that’s the one guy that has to get the information, and then, the supporting cast will be filled in. They’ll get it peripherally after the guy is operating extremely well. What happens is you come to college and you realize that there is a quarterback, receivers, running backs and a number of guys who get their opportunities and just to coach you would be inappropriate, but we’re going to coach the room, and that room’s responsibility is to get that information. Well, many times when a high school player comes to college, he figures, ‘Well, certainly they are going to grab me and go over that when we get onto the field.’ They don’t necessarily need to take that in their mind that coaching in the classroom to the field with them. Certainly, the coach will tell them again, but what happens is, we call the play and we haven’t told you again, but we’ve called the play. This is your opportunity to demonstrate now what you’ve learned in the classroom.

“That is a transition for all freshmen. I think that when you change positions, and we’ve asked him to do a lot of things. We’ve played him at quarterback. We’ve played him at running back. We’ve played him at wide receiver. I think we certainly multiply his issues with how much we’re trying to put on his plate. It’s quite a transition. It’s a transition certainly for him and for many.”

On what we can expect from Shepard after Saturday’s performance...
“We could expect very similar things that we’ve done with him in the past. I think he’ll get an opportunity to catch it. I think he’ll get an opportunity to throw it. I think he’ll get an opportunity to run it, and hopefully, we’ll see some more runs like he had Saturday.”

Miles is dancing quite a bit here in an effort not to be blunt, but it seems that while Miles admits they are throwing an awful lot at him, Shep is having to learn how much committment and dedication is needed to understand the importance of and learning the chalk board stuff.

Most people make that mistake who havent seen him...I saw him 5 times in High School and I have to say I know he'll be a special player...I think thats why you see so many people asking to see him play...And I disagree with people thinking he's not intelligent and cant learn the plays...I've spoken with him on two different ocassions and he is very smart...something is wrong with the communication...He reminds me alot of Arnez Battle (as a person)at Byrd 10 years ago...He's still in the NFL

He also runs straight up and will be out with a knee injury if he doesn't get those pads down.
