Well normally it's a compliment to have a school mimic your school's colors and logos. And it woulnd't make any sense to make the school and mad and the university look bad.

Lutcher.....notice the shadow around the numbers, which makes it a little different. Plus the purple is much darker than LSU's purple

STM was told they have to get rid of their cougar logo because its too closely related to Penn State.

So how is this allowed?

Trademark and copyright law might be an option. Universities and everyone else have learned in recent years the direct and indirect financial value of intellectual property rights.

In Texas, high schools have for years mimicked the college teams. There are several longhorns schools in burnt orange and mustangs in blue throughout the state.

Well, you have to enforce your own trademarks, no one is gonna do it for you. However, I don't see any reason why LSU would want to attack high schools for mimicking them, especially in the Southeast. Its basically free publicity for LSU every time those teams take the field. I know of many other schools that have for example, the Buffalo Bills helmet, or Michigan's helmet in different colors and I think of those teams every time I see them. Can't hurt recruiting is all I'm arguing.

ETA: Of course, I think its a net benefit in these high school cases, but the problem if I recall in trademark cases is if you don't enforce it yourself now, you lose the ability to enforce later.
