Pools vs. Swim Spas vs. Hot Tubs

This has been a long running argument in my house. Wife wants a pool. No one in my neighborhood has a pool because we live on the lake and the water is very warm.

A pool would require cutting down lots of old trees and would cost so much she would have to work for decades after I'm dead and gone.

Above ground hot tubs are OK and easy maintenance and we could re do the deck with one. She doesn't like the idea and neither do I. I like the lake.

So, swim spas are being advertised and I thought it might be like huge hot tubs below ground with less cost and maintenance than pools.

Anybody up in here have experience with the 3?

What does she want the pool for?

If designed right, the swim spa can give you the pool, spa, and a nice water feature to connect your house to your landscape and lake.

She wants to swim to cross train with her running. A pool would require cutting down a lot of trees to be long enough to do laps. The swim spa can be small but it's got all kinds of jets to create current and it's pretty expensive.

However, she's notorious for starting a new sport and then quitting. I've got a $1,500 racing bike in the garage that's been used once.

Join a gym with a pool. Then you can cancel your membership when she quits swimming.

She's had a membership to a gym with a pool for 15 years. She goes once a year but won't cancel because she's going to "start going regularly."

Sounds like she don't need no pool to me then.

I wouldn't build her the pool or whatever if you know she is not going to use it, which is obvious from the biking and gym membership examples.

I would tell her that you'll build a pool once she starts to go to the gym to swim regularly for "x" amount of weeks/months. Tell her if she proves she's serious about it, then you will do it. But if you really don't want to do it, and she calls your bluff and actually does it regularly, then your in a sticky situation.

My compromise was to upgrade the deck and install a large hot tub. That way during the summer when she's out reading and sunbathing on the deck and wants to cool off in a pool she can just dip into an unheated tub. I think she would use that but she insists that she wants to swim.

What age is your wife that she gets all these new workout thoughts? No way would I build the pool, what a waste of $$$$$, + long term maintenance, etc. For the most part people either exercise consistently or they don't. "Build me this so I can start a new regimen" isn't going to change that.

She's 45 and she's a kick arse runner. Wins several 10Ks every year. But she keeps getting hair brained ideas about other sports and then quits.
I've always read that pools are a money pit and I don't need that.

Don't have one myself but this is correct. Might as well fill it with top grade scotch, you'd spend less money.

I got you. My wife was a swimmer and has mentioned numerous times how nice it would be to have a lap pool in the back yard. I just keep quiet and it dies away.

I casually know a few hard core swimmers who are friends with a former co-worker. They do mini and full triathlons and are between 35-50 YO, most of them were talented college swimmers or track competitors. They all train at a facility with excellent coaches, I don't think they could stay motivated in a pool in the yard. 3 of them competed in the Ironman a few weeks ago and did pretty well. If there is a local club or facility that might be worth her checking out to see if it meets her goals. Anyway, 6 months of that would be a heck of a lot more cost effective than a pool. Here is a link to the local club in ATL if interested for ideas:
Dynamo

My parents bought a house that already had a pool. The guy that sold him the house said that the pool cost him $40k to build and when the house got appraised, the pool appaised for $8k.

Right.

If you dig a light blue rectangular hole in the backyard and fill it with water, it won't add value.

In terms of the OP, a lap pool with a hot tub and water features blended with the home&yard can definitely pay for itself on resale --- but it depends on the neighborhood. Think in terms of a decorative fountain with the desired pool features built around it.

What's an "endless pool system?"
BTW, told the wife I'm nixing the swim spa idea. She's in a snit. I think the best buy for us would be a deck upgrade, some nice stone, surrounding a large hot tub/spa with a swim harness.
