Anyone ever bought a used car in another city by looking at Auto Trader, Cars.com, TexasDirectAuto or the like? Did fly to the city to test drive the car? Put a deposit down? Was it from a dealer?

Any help with this experience would be great.

I sold a car on ebaymotors a few years ago. A vintage Porsche 356. I'm in North Carolina and the buyer in California hired a local Porsche mechanic to come by and inspect the car before he bid. He got a good report from the mechanic and bought the car.

same here. I bought an SUV off e-bay a few years ago. Called the seller and asked if I could get it inspected for buying - he said yes. I then called the local Chevy dealership and they went and picked it up and inspected it from top to bottom ($100) and gave me a good report. I then closed the deal. Got a good car at below wholesale

I think i used autotrader and found mine at a dealership in houston. i called and asked about it and did a little negotiating over the phone. I didnt have a mechanic look at it which was probably a mistake but nothing has happened thus far. i put a $500 or a $1000 deposit down and drove down there with my grandfather. it was exactly what i wanted

I always buy CPO's. I bought my last one in Birmingham and the one before that in Mobile. As long as they are certified preowed there isn't much risk as they are still under warranty. I've never bought from a random person though, only dealerships.

Thanks all ... the one I'm looking at is at a dealership but isn't certified pre-owned (it's at a dealer not associated with with the car manufacturer). It's in Florida and I'm in TX so I was just wondering if anyone had a done something similar.

TexasDirectAuto

from my research on this company I give them a:

DO NOT USE

Google "Texas Direct Auto Reviews" for every happy story there will be about 10 negative...

This is the internet though...so this is what sold me on not doing business with these people

Then go to the Better Business Bureau's Main website and search the company: Rating F

They will have a more in depth explanation of complaints, how they were handled, ect.

Overall these guys seem to buy damaged/wrecked cars and make undocumented repairs on them and pretend like they don't know anything.

REALLY GOOD PRICES THOUGH!!!

I bought my truck from an online dealer in Dallas. They were certified with the BBB, had excellent ratings, etc.

Put down a $400 deposit, had it inspected by a mechanic for $100, flew up there for $130 they picked me up from the airport and I drove it back to BR.

Great people to work with, I'd buy again from them if I needed to.

I bought a 05 Infiniti G35 online. I believe it was cars.com. I flew out to Dallas from N.O and bought it. I had everything with me before I flew out, so I know if it was as advertised, that I would buy. Only surprise was black interior, but they did say charcoal. It wasn't that big of an issue and the car checked out, so I bought it. If I didn't buy, I would just be out the airfare.
