Holliday looks to expand role

I remember the misery of the Florida game last year when the Gators really got their offense rolling with those enormous gaps between their lineman. At first I thought it looked goofy as hell. Then they started popping those speedsters through the line and into space and really making us pay. By the end of the game I was wishing we could see Trindon doing something similar.

Maybe we will now. I wonder if Crowton will work in some sets in which our line comes out with huge gaps like those the Gators employed last year. I think Trindon could do some serious damage in such a set. This article certainly has my hopes up.

I hope to see Trindon a little more this year. He's a special talent that we should take advantage of.

Good point and very true. But once they lost to Ole Piss and decided to open it up, they did it to pretty much everyone.

trindon inside? come on, all a lineman would have to do is get an arm free and clothsline him on his arse. it doesn't take much to stop a little guy like trindon. CS and KW are big enough to run through crap like that. i say roll trindon out, but more often

Rainey and Demps are small speedsters as well, but they had some great success up the middle last year at Florida. The big gaps of the offensive lineman spread defenses out and gave them opportunities to dart through into open space. I think Trindon could be very dangerous in that role.

The whole point of the article was that that didn't work well last year when opposing defenses knew where he was going.

Everyone assumes it will just be Trindon if we try to do something like this, but don't forget about Shepard and possibly Calhoun. We have a lot of speed to work with and Crowton has a lot of options and trickery he can use.

He gained the most yardage that he got running inside last year and scored a TD as well.

Yeah I know. I considered that after I posted, but I was really just commenting on the article originally anyway.

Man I'm really starting to salivate over the prospects for our offense this year. Trindon inside + Shepard and maybe even Calhoun = a whole new wrinkle that i think we're going to see from Crowton.

Remember what Jacquizz Rodgers did to USC last year? 37 carries, 186 yds., 2 TDs. I understand comparing Holliday to Rodgers is not an apples-to-apples comparison (among other things, Rodgers weighs 40 pounds more than Trindon). Still, it's worth noting how the 5' 7'' Rodgers seemed to burst out of nowhere behind the OSU offensive line; the Trojans couldn't even see the little guy behind the beasts. Of course, I could never see Holliday piling up all those carries ... but maybe once or twice a game? And it's not like Holliday shies away from contact, he seems like a guy with no fear on the field.

Exactly. We have so many other weapons to use that a few times a game would probably be about it. But I sure hope that this is the way he's used.

plus you have to think every time trindon is in the game, the defense is preparing for him to run on a toss or a reverse. If you're able to open up a hole up the middle, he can get through it quicker than almost anybody then bounce outside. You just have to pray we don't have a breakdown on the line and then trindon could be killed

Which is what we couldn't really spring for big gains last year because they knew what he would be doing. If he can pop some nice gains up the middle, then that should make defenses more honest when he's in and thus make him more of a threat outside as well.

xGeauxLSUx -- Now that you're back on, you clicked on Tiger_n_Atl's post to post this, but I'm guessing it was meant for me. Correct or no?

Although I love the guy, my main problem is if anyone touches him the run is usually over. Not his fault, he's just not big enough. Once he gets around the edge its another story, of course, but up the middle? Maybe here and there, but leave the middle for number 32.

God I would hate to see him broken into two or three pieces on live TV.

Fair enough and I agree. For what it's worth, I'm not advocating Holliday getting ten touches a game all going up the middle. Just that when he does go in, I see an opportunity for success if we can get the defense spread out ala Florida last year. Two or three times a game probably tops.
