it amounts to spam if you're just going to pump the stock. give us some kind of analysis on WHY it's going to go up.

VLO is HORRIBLY managed at the executive level. If they clean house up top I'll buy a few shares.

You can't compare Valero to integrated oil companies like Exxon and Chevron. They're purely downstream, ie. refining, marketing, distribution. As a whole, I don't think refiners have performed very well the past several years - even during the oil boom.

Valero does none of its own drilling so high oil prices aren't necessarily a good thing for them. I have a bro in law that works for em and he said they have cut out overtime this year and are putting off doing a few turn arounds that they are due for. He also said they bought oil at higher prices awhile back out of fear it was gonna go back up to last summer prices so they haven't benefitted from the lower oil prices like they should.

But go ahead and buy a ton of the stuff.

I bought some the day before they came out with the earnings warning, after seeing what a mess the management has created with this company I think I'm going to dump at the soonest sign of strength even if I have to take a loss. One other thing that concerns me with this stock is that they are supposed to be issuing a ton of new stock.

I think VLO is going down farther even if oil continues its rise. Like another poster said they have cancelled 2 large expansions in Port Arthur and in Norco. Looks like it was cheaper to buy a refinery in the Netherlands than do a couple of expansions here.

LINK

Not to mention VLO bought some Ethanol facilities during the boom which is probably killing them even more.
I would wait personally or not buy at all. Maybe I would think about at closer to their 52 week low.
Either way good luck.

Does this thread qualify as recommending a stock pick?

IMO he really ought to reword a few things. Right now it is, but he could easily turn it into a Valero discussion thread, which should be fine. I'll leave it up to the Clucker tho.

During the boom, they definitely performed well...but downstream is not the money maker. It's all upstream
