Some of us were discussing Serena just the other day about how she always has some "excuse" when she loses a match. Well, she lost yesterday and if you read the article in The Advocate, she goes so far as to say that she "gave" the match to her, she (Serena) didn't really want to go to the Semis, and she even says that her opponent had nothing to do with her losing, she (Serena) only beat herself. How can it be that none of the media notices this?? People are "knocking" Lebron James about "sportsmanship" what is this???

If you watched the match, she basically did give it away. She was up I think 3-2 serving 40 love, and her serve went away allowing her to be broken to even up the match. Her serve never was the same for the rest of the match. I give all due respect to Kuznetsova, for fighting back, and turning things around. I'm not the biggest Williams fan, but I do have to admit she has a fighter’s heart, and does not give up. More than I can say for a lot of the other players on tour.

She pretty much NEVER gives an opponent credit when she loses, except for Venus. She never will. She's too competitive.

She WILL, however, shake her opponents hand after the match, and face the media. You listening LeBron, you big pussy?

I pretty much think all great tennis champions do this. I hear it all the time. I had an injury/virus, so I wasn't playing as well as I could. I think because of the singular nature of the sport they can't admit they were beaten by someone playing better. If they did it would come back to haunt them when a match gets tight. They would start to doubt themselves.

Exactly. The moment that you say, "Hey, the other person was just better..." is the moment that you have conceded and will never beat them.

Also, ALL tennis players shake hands, no matter what. That's a part of the game. NOT SO in hoops.

As does everyone else who loses a match. Like Nadia Petrova after Sharapova beat her last week.

I don't see you calling her a little bitch.

I've never seen Steffi or Martina say, "hey, you know what? The other chick was better." Yet, they don't receive criticism. Sharapova doesn't say, "Hey, the other chick was better."

Get over yourselves.

I'm going to assume none of you play tennis competitively. It is near impossible (unless you are Mr. Wholesome) to not be mad after losing a match in 3 sets, unless your opponent is better than you and you were playing out of your mind. Sometimes I storm off the court "like a little bitch" because I felt like I should have won the match. It's really not that easy to say "you know what? They played better than I did".

Okay, how about something like "she played better today" or the similar? Cause, guess what, even if you're the better player, if you're making errors and giving the match away and the other player isn't, they're playing better than you.

It seems the issue here is that it's always about Serena when she loses, with no credit to her opponent for not screwing up like she did.

Incorrect. If something like this is taking place you are failing yourself as a tennis player. There is nothing worse than losing to an opponent who is not as good as you because you defeated yourself.

Exactly. I'm with Them on this (obviously). Anyone who has played tennis (or any other individual sport) competitively understands that and doesn't slam Serena or anyone else for what she said or did.

Do you think that Rafa said that Soderling played better that day?

Shoot, even saying "so and so played better than I did today" is the same as saying, "I didn't play my best and that's why they beat me."

So, once again to most of you on this thread, Get Over Yourselves.

I agree. If you've ever played competitively it is easier to look over what they are saying, because you know the feeling. Like I said before it's the nature of an individual sport.

one of the most competitive person in sports, tiger, always gives credit to his opponent if he plays better than tiger. it has nothing to do with the "mental" part of the game. if it did, how is it that the most mentally tough athlete on the planet can do it??

I don't watch tennis enough to know what every other player does after a match. I saw Serena on ESPN after the match being a sore loser, and not giving her opponent any credit.

Also not related to this, but I hope they never allow coaching on the sidelines. It's bad enough from the stands. It's one of the things I love about tennis. It really is up to you to think of and execute a tactic to defeat the other person when things aren't going well. It's a satisfying feeling to know you were responsible for the win. A loss can be a very big and bitter motivator to try and find a way to rise to the next challenge.

In golf it's you vs. the course more than it is you vs. the other guy. HUGE difference.
