why wasn't he better at the pro level? he was so exceptional at the college level, i thought he would land somewhere and stick around. i realize that when the reds picked him up, they had a pretty good infield (understatement) and i knew he would have to wait until he was picked up by someone else who needed him badly enough.

anybody got the inside scoop?

couldn't hit the big league slider....also not sure if the juicing hurt or helped him overall.

Didn't he have some significant injuries to contend with?

Yes, he never could stay healthy. Josh is right about the steroid rumors. Word was that he was juicing but I never heard that he was caught. He only hit single digit homers in JUCO in 96 and then hits 40 at LSU in 97. Not evidence of steroids, but that probably had a lot to do with the rumors. Plus he had that bulked up look and it was said that he had some of the other symptoms like pimples on the back, etc. As far as I know, the rumors were never substantiated.

agree with the plethora of steriods comments.

plus he hit a club in college..tough transition from pre-1999 NCAA bats.

best memory of larson was the Rice regional and Matt Anderson was chunking 100mph fastballs...the announcers kept talking about how awesome it was and so forth, then **PING** Larson jacks his 100mph junk right out the park.

the entire team was juicing...pretty much common knowledge

I was there and that is indeed a great memory. That ball went over the scoreboard in LF.

FWIW, Larson put up some really good AAA #s but it would never seem to translate to the big leagues

Yea, that is what we've heard. Everyone talks about it as if it is a given. Anyone know what the testing protocol was, if any, in the late 1990s?

Of course you are right, I missed that in his post. It was our first game in the 1997 CWS.

I don't remember what it was, but I remember announcers on air actually saying guys like Furniss were taking creatin and other enhancers and were studying the effects of them

creatin was the rage during that time, and supposedly it was part of the baseball team's core training/supplement program....but they were also doing steroids
