How hard are the EIT/PE exams?

Has anyone taken these exams? Scale of 1 to 10 how hard are they compared to the information you learned in undergrad? Are the hardest courses of each engineering discipline covered, or is it more just an overview? What about for someone who didn't do any undergrad engineering? Does one type of engineer do better on them, say mechanical vs electrical or chemical? Just trying to get a background to see if I may be interested.

I'm not sure what that means but you should definitely take it

FWIW I passed it the first time (EE)

There is a general section...I'd advise you review basic physics concepts and make sure you can calculate some basic financial problems using compounding interest.

The major specific section was more difficult IMO

I passed the EIT on the first go around (ChemE). I haven't taken the PE yet.

This won't make life easy, it could be done though.

i think you have to have an engineering degree to take the EIT. if you are still in school, then the engineering department must approve you to take it.

i took both. i found the EIT not too bad. i took it my last semester in school. i took the PE twice. passed it the second time. the worst part about the PE is that you have to study while working and you don't see a lot of that stuff on a daily basis.

I have to pick a major? I did undergrad in physics and a masters in EE, but I work as a mechanical engineer now. I'd want to take mechanical for the major specific if I had to pick one. Ouch. What're the hard mechanical courses, fluid dynamics and thermo?

re: How hard are the EIT/PE exams?

I've only taken the EIT so far and it was a few years ago. I was still in undergrad school as a ME. It wasn't that bad. In fact I got tired of taking it and just stopped after I thought I had answered enough questions to pass.

As far as what type of engineers do the best on it I can remember a statistic where EEs have the highest passing rate of those that take it the first time. Followed by MEs and CheEs. All of these disciplines had over a 90% pass rate. Civil had a little over a 50% pass rate when taking it for the first time. (These numbers are for LSU undergrads). Of course this was about 8 years ago. The numbers may have changed.

it can depend on your field.

i am a civil engineer and from the looks of things i won't go very far without getting my PE.

i have two brothers that are both engineers. one is a mechanical, he took the FE and did not pass. but he doesn't even need that.

my other brother is a Chemical and is very successful(very high up at his plant) he never even took the FE.

Pretty much. Thermo is actually only hard because it's a course you take early on in your schooling. After years of being removed form that time in my life I can say that it really wasn't that bad of a course.

Fluid dynamics and maybe heat transfer were harder for me.

Definetly pick one of the major specific tests for the PE. They have a general engineering PE tests, but I've heard it's the hardest one.

Probably because statistically EEs are the most intelligent engineers

You want to start talking about Deal or No Deal again?

J/K

Actually I think it's because the courses that EEs, MEs, and ChemEs take prepare them better for the FE (or EIT).

My wife passed the EIT exam on her first try....this was in Fall '01 while still an undergrad in Environmental Engineering.

She said there were plenty of topic's she hadn't seen before (being EVEG), but she was able to reason her way through it.

That being said, she probably has a 150 IQ....

re: How hard are the EIT/PE exams?

I passed the EIT first time.(EE) The undergrad studies were important here. Also, there is a large focus on just Math in the morning EIT session.

I have taken the PE a couple of times to no avail. They have recently changed the format of the PE. It used to be a general morning session (ie, everything to do with electrical engineering) and a specific afternoon (computers, electronics/controls, power) Now, the PE is all specific, ie. both sessions are power related). I plan on taking it again in Oct., hopefully with some different results.

ETA: With this being said, the problems were not difficult at all. I ran into a section of problems in both tests that I had no idea what they were. They are definitely passable. I'm just an idiot.

Passed EIT first time (Civil)

Just look over the example exam in the practice book one or 2 days before.

What made the PE tougher for you?
I'll be taking it sometime next year.

I took the FE during my fall semester of my last year. Passed it on the first try. Didn't study for it just looked over the formula book. If you work for a major firm you don't need it but the smaller the place the more you will need to get a PE. Don't take the second general section. Everyone I know that did so didn't pass.

I'd want the general one if they offered it.

It would make my life easier. I do analysis now that PEs have to sign off on. They've never seen this type of analysis, nor do they really understand it. I just lay out my assumptions and put the page number of the Standards that I get my equations from. I swear they just check to see if my calculations are right, not my analysis. Who knows though, I'd rather not have the liability (if I'd still make ~$80k). There's not really a promotion for me in it because I'm a one man team. I'm pretty sure if they wanted a $150k/yr engineer to do what I do they could find one. It'd still be cool if they paid for it.

it was the exact opposite when i took it.

i took the second general section and passed without studying. but talked to a couple that took the major specific and failed.

This is exactly right. My wife works for a national consulting firm, and they already have plenty of PE's on staff, so she never bothered to take the PE.....

Honestly, if you study, its not that hard.

A little background. I graduated from UL in Computer Engineering under EE. My background was that. I now work in the utility industry working strictly in Power. UL has no Power Engineering courses. I took the computers PE once and and Power once. I switched and didn't have the proper material for the Power. Honestly, its not hard. I really feel stupid. I have taken the test with someone from my office each time, once with three different people. All have passed the first time. There is also someone we all consider the office idiot that has also passed it since. Something tells me that I have taken over this title.
