quote:

When Louis started warming up, it was 5-0 and I wasn’t comfortable with where we were, because the Tulane game was fresh on my mind,” Mainieri said, referring to an 8-7 loss to the Green Wave on Wednesday, when the bullpen faltered badly and threw extra roadblocks in an LSU comeback that fell a run short.

Louis was already hot, so I can’t have him warm up again. It was either use him there or waste him and hope we got enough from everybody else.

Then he goes out and takes charge of the game and gets us to the ninth in good shape. The way Georgia came back late made me confident I made the right decision to bring Louis in when I did.

Also,

quote:

The Tigers’ up-and-down bullpen was a man short because sophomore Daniel Bradshaw was struck on his right (throwing) elbow by a foul ball in Georgia’s first inning and was ruled out for the night.

You calling Mainieri an idiot? Even he knows he can't use Coleman that way.

quote:

“I know I can’t do what I did with Coleman every weekend,” Mainieri said. “We’ve got to find somebody we can go to in middle relief and rely on them to bridge the gap to Matty Ott.

I am a proud member of the idiot brigade. That being said, I think PM recognized just how dangerous UGA was, and didn't want to risk it even with a 5 run league. And as he said himself, Coleman was warmed up and didn't want to waste it.

What is good to see (as posted above) is that he also recognizes that the move was not ideal, and he doesn't want to do that again in the future. It, hopefully, won't come to that again before the post-season (maybe against Arkansas, though).

It makes a big difference when you know all the details. If you don't like a a coach say so and move on but to keep on putting down on the moves he makes during a game is silly. This is the game of baseball. Just like any other sport you take them one game at a time. All we have to do is look back at what we did during our run last year, how many times did we go into the late innings behind and we pulled out wins when we all thought they were loses. The same thing can happen to us this year it could be someone elses turn to pull out games esspecially when you are on their homefeild. He did what he thought he had to do in order to get at least one game from over the weekend and the way it turned out we got two.

It was not a conventional move to make in a baseball sense. Glad to see PM recognizes that fact and it is not something he will do every weekend.

I appreciated his explanation.

I posted this last night when the someone else showed that Maineri had said this

quote:

Now that makes some sense. Thanks Padge1. I didn't hear the game Friday until Coleman was in with a 8-0 lead. To me, this has been the most informative post on the subject.

People need to understand that in many situations in all sports that coaches are aware of more factors than the fans are (injuries, player abilities, etc).

For the record, I never agreed nor disagreed with Coach Maineri's use of Coleman, I just started arguing the fact that a bullpen is not nearly as taxing on an arm as pitching in a live game situation.

i don't know, it really looks like Coleman puts too much stress on his elbow to have any longevity. Trust me, I know...I ruined by elbow pitching in HS. Of course, I hope I'm wrong.

many situations? how about every situation in the history of coached sports.

Aside from that, it's funny that this needs to be said out loud.

Everyone's body is different. You should see Randy Johnsons arm when he pitches.

i still don't agree with using our best pitcher up 8-0. he is too valuable.

btw, i don't remember 1/2 the people being on the in-game threads last season during the losing streak. Most of the people saying it wasn't the right call were the ones defending him last season when everyone was calling for his head
