Though LSU finished #1 in 1958, AP trophy went to Iowa...

Realizing the AP was the authoritative championship selector at the time, I'm not sure many realize that:
The reason this is brought up now is mostly because I realized a lot of people are unaware of this. Though voted #1 prior to the bowls, they gave the NC trophy to Iowa.
Any thoughts on the '58 champion (mine's still biased of course ) and the champions selection process (old tymers)?

Iowa finished the year ranked #2 in the AP poll, behind 11–0 LSU, although that vote was taken before the bowl games. The Football Writers Association of America, arguably the most prestigious organization at the time to vote on a national champion after the bowls were played, gave their national championship trophy, the Grantland Rice Award, to Iowa.

Nope, AP went to LSU--so did UPI and several other associations we would not recognize today.
Iowa, who was only 8-1-1, got the nod from the FWAA-the Football Writers' Assn. of America.

This is the South Sur. When the legend becomes fact, you print the legend.

1) please tell me you didnt use the user edited Wikipedia as your source?
2) you do realize AP and the football writers are 2 completely different organizations, and each awarded their own trophy in 1958?

With all due respect, STFU and GTFO.

The FWAA, who did award their trophy to 8-1-1 Iowa for 1958, is not the Associated Press. Google could clear that up pretty quickly for you...

I never understood why we don't claim all the championships, such as 1908, 1936, 1937, etc. You know other schools would...

As stated, LSU did indeed win the AP AND UPI polls in 1958. 2007 was LSU's first FWAA title.Whereas the FWAA did have more validity in the 50's and 60's than it does now,it was still thought of as small potatoes back then.
FWAA also awarded its 1961 title to Ohio State instead of Alabama, who won the AP and UPI titles. Both LSU and Alabama were unbeaten and united those years and won its bowl even though the titles were awarded ahead of the bowls. Iowa had a tie and loss, while Ohio State had a tie and declined a bid to the Rose Bowl.
Not awarding LSU and Alabama its titles in '58 and '61 really cheapened the FWAA titles.
