quote:

Q: YOU MOVED SAFETIES TO OUTSIDE LINEBACKER AT UT. WILL YOU DO THAT HERE?

CHAVIS: "You let guys grow that are going to grow. It's those type guys that are going to grow, and it's all about speed. We've always tried to build our package on speed. And it's all about match-ups. When the offense looks at it, it's about mismatches, and you don't want to give them any mismatches. There's a lot of people that use the term, basketball on grass, and you've got to put people out there that can match up. But you also have to be able to stop the run. We've done a great job of that in the past with scheme, but really when you start looking at putting a defense together, the first thing and the thing we preach the most is speed."

Q: SOME OF YOUR BIGGER SAFETIES ARE HARRY COLEMAN, CHAD JONES AND DANNY MCCRAY. ARE THOSE CANDIDATES FOR OUTSIDE LINEBACKER?

CHAVIS: "We may look at that if it creates a situation that we're going to be able to get our 11 best people on the field. Right now, those guys are safeties, and they'll be given that opportunity to go compete at that position. Certainly they have already competed and played well, played really well there. It's too early to even mention names or anything like that, but we're going to work hard to get our 11 best players on the field, whoever they are."

quote:

Q: WOULD IT BE ACCURATE TO SAY YOU BLITZE A LOT?

CHAVIS: "We blitz when we want to. We blitz when we want to, and we don't always blitz to stop the pass. We blitz for the run game. Yeah, we do pressure a good bit. We're not going to just go out there and blitz for blitzing. We blitz for reasons. We want to understand what we're doing. We want our players to understand what they're doing. But we'd like to consider ourselves as a pressure defense."

Interesting read, thanks. I also liked these...

Q: HEAD COACH LES MILES WAS TALKING ABOUT NOT WANTING TO SUBSTITUTE AS MUCH THIS SEASON BECAUSE MAYBE HIS DEFENSIVE COACHES DID THAT TOO MUCH LAST YEAR. DID YOU SUB A LOT AT TENNESSEE?

CHAVIS: "We basically had two packages that we worked a lot — our base package and our dime package, where we put six defensive backs in."

Q: YOU HAD NO SEPARATE NICKEL (FIVE DEFENSIVE BACKS FOR PASS SITUATIONS)?

CHAVIS: "No. Our base package was basically our nickel package. We just moved that outside linebacker up and back, inside and outside. You look for a guy that's got skills enough to do some or really all the things that we want to do in our base package. And you like to play with that guy because he's going to get the reps, he's going to get all the looks. You're not working an extra package in practice. And to me, if you're going to go nickel, why not go dime, where you're going to get the match-ups all over? And you're going to do some things to help yourself in the run game."

Q: AND THEY DON'T KNOW WHEN YOU'RE IN PASS-DEFENSE NICKEL BECAUSE YOU ALWAYS HAVE NICKEL PERSONNEL IN?

CHAVIS: "No, they don't. That's right."

Looks like we will be Drop-linebacker U again. I know Chavis loved to quote Tepper up here in Knoxville.

Maybe we weren't reading the same article. In terms of "drop linebackers", it seems the intent is to drop our linebackers into the offensive backfield. The emphasis on pressure is totally antithetical to Tepper.

Nice read and thanks for posting it. Was he saying LSU is going to use the 3-4 alignment? It sounded that way to me. I liked his use of the term 'pressure defense' that he said so often.

I may be wrong, but I want to say that having a good OLB that can cover a slot receiver is much different than the drop linebacker concept.

Sounded like a 4-2-5 would be the "Base" defense, with that "5th" defensive back being a hyrid LB/Safety, or what LSU fans know as an "OLE LOU" Linebacker. Looks like Chavis wants to eliminate "bringing in" the nickel package and just use the 4-2-5 as the base and bring in the dime (6 DB's) on obvious passing situations. That would simplify things considerably. It will cut down on substitutions and SHOULD eliminate all the mass confusion that was seen last year. Like I've been saying, let'em play without having to "Think" too much......

I would love to see McCray put on 10-15 pounds and move to linebacker. He is such a liability when he is in coverage. If I were an opposing coach I would line up 5 wide outs, see who McCray is matched up with and throw it to that receiver all game. At LB he would do better covering TE's and RB's.

I just want to bring the defense tradition back of leveling whoever the QB is at BAMA every year.

Where you at Craig Loston?!

Tenn. loss is LSU gain, in the long run LSU will come out better in the deal. Daddy Kiffin is very old and he won't be coaching for very much longer. It has to hurt recruiting also, because young recruits has to know that Daddy Kiffin won't be there. Where D. C. Chavis will be at LSU for a much longer time.

Q: WHEN THE CHANGE WAS MADE AT TENNESSEE (LETTING HEAD COACH PHILLIP FULMER GO AND HIRING LANE KIFFIN), DID YOU HAVE ANY CHANCE OF STAYING?

CHAVIS: "I had no desire to stay. The way I look at it, I'm a guy that has a lot of loyalty toward the people I'm working for. And when they made the coaching change with coach Fulmer, I had no desire to stay. And that's not a reflection. And I don't really want to make a big deal out of that, but I would not have stayed even if I had been asked to. No, I wasn't asked to, but I wouldn't have stayed. That was me. I was part of that. It was over, and it's time to move on. It's time to go. I'm excited about what is a special opportunity at LSU."

Wasn't McCray the guy that lost us the Arkansas Game in OT when he let them get a first on 4th and like 11 or something? He was 15 yards from the guy he was supposed to cover. That was the game right there.

I've never heard Tiger Stadium roar like that in the North Endzone where I was, because we all knew that play would flat win the game, and he got burned.

You really don't know what you talking about with this whole football concept, do you?
