I am looking to lower my premiums.
Current coverage is for me, wife, and the teenager (who will soon be 20), for each of our 3 cars.
My wife and I have clean driving histories for the past 5 yrs or so, but......
...the teenager has had multiple tickets and fender-benders, and our premiums are outrageous.
Would it be a good idea (and is it possible) to drop him from our policy and for him to go get his own policy in his own name?

Does he work and what kind of car will he be insuring for himself?
I did this around the same age and I was paying upwards of $225/month on a relatively new Dodge Ram with no accidents on record. I think my deductibles were at $500 for both comp and collision.

He works part time, school at BRCC part time.
His car is a VW GTI (used to be the Golf). Has a 4 cylinder engine w/ turbo, 5 speed trans.
Not exactly a granny car.
$225 seems high for a truck and clean record.

it would be worth looking into getting him his own policy - try progressive.

you can drop him from the policy as a named insured but you have to make sure he doesnt drive you or your wife's vehicle. if he gets in a wreck as an excluded driver, you're fricked.

who are you currently with??
of course the cheapest is State Farm, however they will hammer you if you have marks on your record.
Your best bet is probably Progressive or AIG personal lines.
FYI - im an insurance producer if you need any help.

Sure. He's moved out of town, drives his own car 100% of the time.
We have coverage 100/300/100 for all 3 cars.
If we drop his name from our cars and if he gets his own 10/20/10, or whatever the minimum is now, me and the wife's rates go down, but will his be sky high on his own? and not be a real savings?
Don't exactly have his driving record to post up here, but was looking for some ballpark numbers.
Thanks.

I have Farm Bureau (yak) but have been told by parents who switched FROM Farm Bureau that they had CHEAPER TEEN BOY premiums when they were with FB.
As soon as my son turns 18 the car & ins policy will be in his name only so that in the tragic event something happens, they can't come after me (from what I have been told by attorneys .. hope that is good info).
My son as primary on an 03 expedition is $225 per month ... price before adding him was $85 ... have comp/coll, 50/100/50 (I think).
Good luck .. post what you find if you don't mind!

wrong...
i don't work for state farm. but if your records clean, you generally can't beat them.
i'm an independent agent and i prefer progressive. also, if you have marks on your record progressive is probably your best bet. state farm will rape you if you have anything on your record, and farm bureau will drop you.

Hey G Vice ... for primary my son on an 03 expedition is $225 per month with Farm Bureau ... good student, driver's ed discount, multicar discount ... no accidents/tickets.
SAME coverage with Progressive was $110 more per month.
I know people with progressive and were very happy ...

I apologize.
I have my auto insurance through America First. Both vehicles (wife - Acura MDX / me - Honda Accord) covered cost $1421.00 per year. 100/300/100 coverage, with UMI. 1K deductibles.
From what I can tell, I think I received a pretty good rate.
I also have my homeowner's insurance through them as well. $921.00 per year, 2 % deductible for $260K worth of coverage.
