Bama Expanding the stadium

Just saw on Fox Sports that Bama has approved a expansion that would increase Bryant-Denny Stadium to 9,000 seats in the south end zone that would enlarge the capacity from 92,138 to well more than 101,000.
This would place Bryant-Denny, which is already the eighth largest stadium in the country, among only five football stadiums in the United States seating 100,000 or more.
My question is when is LSU going to be expanding because we definitely can't let the Tide have a larger stadium than us.

We can and will let them have a larger stadium for at least 5-10 more years. Face it.

We had a bigger stadium than them all through the 90's, that didn't manage to stop them or help us.

why not there is a waiting list for season tics now. im sure lsu can sell 10k more tickets.

quote:LSU could probably sell some more season tickets but could they get all the asses in the seats for games like ULL and Troy. There are lots of people who buy tickets and only go to games like Florida and Alabama. You have a 100,000 seat stadium and 1/2 of the games you would draw about 85,000 people.

i agree with you 100% we need to schedule better ooc opponents. im not saying we need powerhouse programs but give us some diff. teams.

Well, they could easily get to 100k seats by closing the south endzone. They would have to lower ticket prices to get people in those seats, but it would still turn a profit. Even if they only had 85k people in the seats for weak ooc opponents, it would be financially viable to have the expansion.

If the AD can muster up the money, that's fine. But now is not the time. Especially with the economy and the budget cuts LSU is facing. I know the AD is completely separate, but I think this expansion can wait.
Renovations, on the other hand, might be a little more practical at this stage. Our stadium is far from perfect as it is.

LSU football program -and TAF- pays for everything itself, as does our Baseball team. The higher education budget cuts do not affect the football or baseball program.
In fact, LSU Baseball is the ONLY baseball program in the country that isn't paid for by another program (i.e. Football, or Basketball).

ive been a season ticket holder for 11years and i hear people say lsu fans are spoiled due to the atmospher at those troy, ull ,latech, games. but ithink it would be better if they would at least schedule some diff. teams.maybe a byu,s.fla, iowa st.ect.

Simple - we won't.
Ticket prices will continue to hike and TAF's corporate members will pay whatever it costs to book seats. By expanding to 105 K, ticket value is not nearly as high, as competition to become a season ticket holder is significantly decreased. Not only that, but the stadium has rarely been FULL (every seat in the house taken) and the last thing we need is another empty upper deck. The main reason, though, is the former as LSU, by keeping the capacity at 92K, will continue to be able to raise the price of a ticket and continue to increase its TAF membership #'s as current non-holders will donate large amounts of money to get on and move up on the priority list.
The TAF was an ingenious club to create at LSU. The founding members knew what they were doing. Although the TAF contributions have allowed LSU to stay on pace with the nation's best universities as far as facilities and rennovations go, a lot of bad has come from the greed and the allowing of businesses to secure rows and rows of seats. Death Valley will never be the same, thanks to this. LSU will get richer, facilities will get even better, and TIger Stadium will become lamer and lamer. Some of the best LSU fans will rarely sit inside of the stadium that they once could afford to get wasted and have a loud, drunk, and noisy fun time in.

Sad, but true. However, we also win National Championships now, so you kind of have to take the bad with the good.

100% true the sports dept.funds itsself the state contributes no $ to the athl.dept.the club level has a 3 to 4k taf trad.fund.when those tickets went on sale they soldout in 30 days so i know 10k more season tickets would sell with no problem.

pisces +1, my friend. Well put.
The disappointing thing is that there are those families who have had season tickets in their families for generations. As ticket prices and "mandatory donations" rise, some of them will have to give up their season tickets so that some rich, old white guy who's less undeserving can pay the extra premium.

tiger jeux: if it werent for the rich old white guy that place would be shite.

Well, it would make sense that those rich old white guys would have season tickets to begin with, yes?
I was talking more about the "new" rich old white guys.

The TAF people I feel bad for are the ones who donate $1,000 or so a year and then wonder why they remain stagnant or even fall behind when it comes to point standings. What's REALLY in it for them aside from their appreciated, but miniscule gift to the university they love?
As I have said before...the top ten percent of the TAF is much, much richer than the remaining 90 percent.

If not for corporations who give tons of money to LSU is what you mean.
I'd love to know how many seats Capital One has...how many Coca-Cola has.
